VALE BERNIE LYNCH

It’s with the heaviest heart I’m posting this to let everyone know that Bernie passed away last Thursday evening in palliative care in Perth. Some of you will be aware that Bernie was diagnosed with throat cancer in early 2024 and underwent treatment. The throat cancer treatment was deemed successful, and he was able to resume working. Late last year, cancers started appearing throughout his body, in his bones and organs, and he started to deteriorate rapidly. Initially, it was thought chemotherapy could extend his life expectancy, but ultimately, he became too ill to continue with treatment.

I am heartbroken and don’t know how to proceed without him. I arrived in Australia as a 21-year-old in 1977 and met Bernie not too long after, we’ve been in each other’s lives ever since. I can’t imagine what our lives would have looked like had we not crossed paths with each other. I don’t know how many shows Eurogliders have done over the years, it must be thousands, and for every single one of them, I’ve had Bernie there, standing beside me. It’s been such a wonderful, wonderful journey and I’m so very proud and honoured to have shared it with him.

Bernie was an incredibly kind and caring person and generous to a fault. He’d fuss about making sure the band were happy and had after-show cheese and biscuits, and a refreshing beverage. He’d come to stay at my house and turn up with bags of food and take over the kitchen. He was funny and intelligent and engaging. If you weren’t well, or life had thrown you a curve ball, he’d be the first one on the phone to see how you were going. He was a people person and loved a chat.

And, of course, there’s the songs. Without Bernie’s songs there would be no Eurogliders. Songs he wrote as a young man that are still being listened to, songs that 40 years later still get played on the radio, songs that people still sing along to at our shows. Songs that have bought so much joy to so many people. What a great legacy and such a fantastic contribution to the cultural landscape of this country.

My dear friend. We soared high, we grappled in the mud. What an incredible life we shared. I feel immense gratitude. I can’t let you go; I won’t let you go.

My heartfelt condolences go to his family, loved ones and musical family…. we’ll all miss him very much.

Had the Eurogliders play in Albury three or four times. Bernie then moved here for two years with his partner. Great times, coffee, music and swapping/buying records.
One of the most level headed, friendly musicians that I ever had the pleasure of meeting. I had throat cancer in 2022, Bernie had the same cancer in 2024. Life is sometimes very weird and harsh - Rest In Peace Bernie.

Ken was a remarkable person and always attended games until the end. He was always willing to help the players and would regularly attend trainings or other functions.

Crossed paths a couple of times with him over the years and he loved a chat about the game.

The club honoured him well tonight.

His 86 invincibles was probably the greatest side in the history of the NBL

He still has the honour of delivering one of my all time favourite sprays whilst coach

“That’s the worst exhibition of cheating refereeing I’ve ever seen in Australian basketball and they ought to be burnt in ******* hell”

He coached a junior squad I was in more years ago than I’d care to remember.

To say he was a hard man would be an understatement, but you would run through brick walls for him and be grateful for the opportunity. Then once the work was done he had a sublime ability to pump your tyres up no end.

Australian basketball owes him a huge amount of gratitude.

Bernie Lynch, founder of the Eurogliders gone aged 72.

Not everyone’s cup of tea but they were a big part of my teen years and i had a heap of singles on 7” vinyl at the time.

Seen them lives couple of times and thought they were pretty cool too

When I was at High School arounfd 1970, we had a Yank PE teacher who was here playing basketball at St Kilda Saints where Ken Cole was playing and coaching. This Yank was a massive hardarse and he had us doing US Marine style exercises and cadences, he also got us tickets to watch him play. One game he obviously did not put in hard enough for Ken Cole who just sat him on his bum on the court, stood over him and told him strongly to do better. It was worth all the extra pain we got next PE class to see.

Former high court chief justice Anthony Mason dies at 100

Anthony Mason, who served as the chief justice of the high court, has died. He was 100.

The high court issued a statement saying the longtime justice would be honoured with a ceremonial sitting of the court in June.

Mason served on the court beginning in 1972, and was later chief justice from 1987 to 1995. He was made a knight commander of the order of the British empire in 1972.

The high court said in a statement:

Sir Anthony’s contribution to the jurisprudence of the High Court, and to the legal system and profession more broadly, was profound and is enduring. He was a jurist who was and continues to be regarded with deep respect and admiration, and a man who is remembered with affection and appreciation by those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Not a pleasant judge to appear before.

My first PE teacher at the same high school was Steve “the ruck whisperer” Taubert. We thought he was pretty cool, as he rocked up to school in a 260z. And he was a decent bloke as well.

His replacement- Rod “Curly” Austin. Who was a little stricter- but again a decent bloke. All the girls loved his legs.

Not many are.

I don’t know about that.

You’ll have to take my word for it then.

Well that was a polite way of saying I disagree. I usually found judges very courteous and civil. Only a few exceptions.

Depends on how many you’ve been in front of

Chuck Norris has met his match.

Death finally built up the courage to tell him.

A true legend.

In b4 he’s inevitably dragged on here for being a Republican voting Christian.
