It can’t be a coincidence.
For Sydney and Melbourne, winter has been the warmest on record, with a mean temperature above all previous years in the Bureau of Meteorology’s (BOM) meteorological history for both cities dating back to the 1850s.
Canberra also saw its highest ever winter temperatures, while for Adelaide and Hobart, this season will rank as the second-warmest on record.

I had a 9yo 4.8kw system (no battery) where a few panels got hit by massive hailstones last November. No noticeable drop in performance short term, but insurance paid out ~$30k for a whole new system because of ‘hot spots’ (almost 3 times replacement cost). I’ve to wait 9 months, but just had installed 8.5kw of new panels and a 24kw battery for $22k, keeping the $8k in change. Insurance premium went up around 20%, but I’m definitely calling that a win. Shouldn’t be importing any from grid now and have instant backup for blackouts. Just a question of how long until I cop another storm with cricket ball-sized ice rocks (Brisbane).

Australia’s new national agency for environmental protection has approved its first coal project, allowing a Queensland open-cut mine to keep digging until 2055 while clearing threatened woodland and koala habitat.
Not overtaken coal yet as the sun doesnt shine at night but its a lot.
A strategic retreat? I must have missed the bit where we put up a fight. So much for Paris …

The wind in Sydney yesterday afternoon was ■■■■■■■ crazy. It actually felt dangerous to be outside. It’s been a rather warm start to our spring but temperatures for the next week or so will be about average for this time of year. Yesterday felt like an ominous warning as to what might lie ahead. Let’s hope not.

So frustrating. Koalas could actually be extinct in NSW by 2050, but despite the electoral promise of creating a Great Koala National Park, it’s yet to be realised, and now they’re trying to amend the concept to say yes it can be created… but only under the INFM (Improved Native Forest Management) method. Which basically means that state governments could stop creating national parks unless the big polluters pay them first. And a lot of the land allocated for the park was never going to be logged in the first place, so the big polluters pay to ‘save land’ that never actually needed to be saved. And in the mean time their emissions stay the same, climate change gets worse, and the elevated temperatures, particular where it’s a number of days in a row, are killing koalas.
Senate votes on the INFM method on September 15. I hope they see sense.

I love Juice Media. I had to laugh at the ‘Climate Chrises’ but there’s nothing funny about all of this.
We definitely need to move away from the major parties, but Australians are looking in the wrong direction. The environment seems to be way down the list as people won’t vote for it because of reasons. Our children are going to hate us for it.

Love to see the average temps for Noto (Sicily) and Tropea.
Feel like it is hotter than it has ever been. Noto had 3 days in a row above 40 (real feel 45) in late August. I reckon July is usually the hotter months too

A quick search of Noto reveals an average temp of around 30⁰C for August and that is usually the hottest month.
Western Europe has been heating up at double the pace of the rest of the world. The Mediterranean is at record highs at the moment which would be driving up the humidity as well. SSTA = sea surface temperature anomaly

The Vuelta a Espaṉa is having to modify its routes because it’s 40 plus every day, and most of the route is in Andalusia. They took 100km out of one day’s route a few days ago and quite a few cyclists have dropped out because of the heat. Every day is about 180km through mostly mountainous terrains.
Not sure it’s a recent development, because it was furiously hot in September 2016 when I was there. Never got much above 20 in May 2024.
