It occurred to me after contemplating our forthcoming 29th loss from 30 matches ( correct the math if I’m wrong ) that there may be some of our players that have never sung our team song , “ See the Bombers Fly Up “ after a senior match. In fact there could be a player or two that have never sung the club song in either the AFL or contemporary VFL. Indeed it’s possible that due to delisting there could be players with a number of games under their belt that never got to sing our club song. If people knew who these players were it would make a great Footy trivia question.
BTW until the 1950’s VFL team songs weren’t really that well known, and some clubs never had them until that time. I remember asking King Richard aka Dicky Reynolds if songs were sung after a match .in the 1930’s and 40’s. He said they always were come victory or loss but they varied and were mostly the tunes of the day accompanied by a piano or piano accordian. Essendon’s first official theme song and still the current one was first sung in the rooms after our grand final loss to Melbourne in 1959. Thereafter the tradition for all teams was to sing a steam song only after victory.
Yeah, right. Never mind the words. It’s high time the players learnt the melody and SANG it, together, instead of just chanting it tunelessly. With a couple of hours’ practice, they could even learn harmony lines, and sing it as if they meant it…
Yeah, right… “We’re paid to play football, not to sing…”
Well fellas - you don’t do either, so maybe it’s time to show some team spirit and start by SINGING the song. If you don’t like that, Woollies are always looking for shelf-stackers…
