Get the N100. Much newer cpu.
I use this in my home to run my model trains.
If you have your old keyboard, mice and monitor may i suggest looking at beelink stuff. Bit cheaper and more memory.
I’ll get a laptop just from a “picking it up and using it elsewhere” perspective.
But will stay in the N100 market. Had a look in store and would probably prefer a 14-inch over a 15.6 so will shop around online.
My PC just started making a horrible noise and then froze, while the noise continued.
I held down the on button and switched it off…and it wouldn’t start. Lights were off and nobody was home.
Freaked me out.
Pulled out the tablet to search for some answers hoping to goodness my fairly new PC hadn’t just croaked it.
All the replies were the same: first thing to do is change the CMOS battery. Amazingly had the exact one at home, they are the same as my key fob battery.
All fixed and working again. Learn something new everyday.
You must have had that PC for a long time, I’m guessing.
No, that’s what’s bothering me.
Unusual, but not unheard of, for a CMOS battery to die that early.
While that worked I am not sure it was that. The thing died again and wouldn’t even allow the button to be pressed to turn it off. Had to yank the power.
Left it off and went to bed early.
Got up this morning and started fine. Immediately updated the graphics card and have been monitoring temps and other aspects. Seems to be okay atm.
It never sounded like a CMOS battery to me.
The ‘horrible noise’ you mentioned - was it a warning note, or a fan noise?
Couldn’t start my laptop today. Wanted a BitLocker recovery key which I finally found but still didn’t get me into Windows. Took it to local computer shop and their “expert” told me that Windows had crashed and only way was to wipe everything and reinstall Windows losing all my data. Not sure I agree with him so need another opinion.
I have a backup but it was last backed up about 6 weeks ago, another failing on my part.
Anyway any tips for a Microsoft Surface Laptop service genius would be appreciated.
I`m only a novice, But don’t wipe anything. I would remove the drive, replace with another, install an operating system on it and view your original drive with a docking station to see what you can save. you can always swap it back to the original drive and you are back where you started.
You might be able to boot from a usb device that has windows on it. Then look at the internal drive (you’ll need the bitlocker key to do that). That might also give you the option to repair the operating system or boot sector.
I will give it a try
Thanks
If you get hold of the USB as Barry mentioned above, try the “repair” option before reinstalling.
If that’s still a thing. I think it is.
Did you try turning it off and on again?
Not the worst idea. Even try full reboot. Hold power button in until it reboots.
Turn it off at the wall. Let em know who’s boss
Ridiculous how much ram prices have gone up thanks to AI companies buying them out a kit of 32GB will set you back over $600
One the best free windows bloatware if anyones interested, i use it and its free.
this ram “shortage” is a scam, there is no shortage, you can go anywhere and buy ram, my suppliers are overstocked with ram as no one is silly enough to buy it
