Coteries

Where do we sign up?

Is there some sort of initiation that involves a tub of lard, a turkey baster and a pineapple ring?

If you put in substantial money, you would want some control. Isnt that normal. But coteries are more about personal/ business networking / finding new friends arent they?

By and large, the coteries are a major asset for clubs, and ours are much stronger than most. Plenty of the weaker clubs would kill to have the financial resources we have via these groups.

However, the financial clout and the access this gets coterie members does come with some risks. Thereā€™s a number of people who suspect that one of Caroline Wilsonā€™s best sources for Essendon information is a senior coterie member.

Essendon Coterie groups do a great job for our Club. Much of it goes unrecognised & is done without fanfare, especially in relation to player support & welfare.

But yep there are all sorts of ways of supporting the Club.

Be a Coterie Member & tip in big through your wallet.
Be a Club Member & actually attend games, events, training etc.
Be a fan who buys souvenirs & barracks from afar.
Or any combination of the above.

Of course you can just be a loud mouthed know all on Blitz instead.

good to go.

Id say they have an image problem.

Or is it the rest of us being envious ?

The two arenā€™t mutually exclusive.

I love it.

Itā€™s all Jackson Merrettā€™s fault

I donā€™t care if you are a member of a coterie or just a regular barracker, once you see a coach playing Hocking on Le Cras at fuill back you have an obligation to use whatever influence you have to get that coach replaced.

Of their money or influence?

Is the position of the coteries really that ā€˜peasant members only hate us cos weā€™re richā€™?

No idea, when I have been at coterie events, most are too ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  to hate anyone except Fark Carlton.

I posted this because of all the comments by some in other threads bagging coteries, and thought maybe some of them may have the balls to fess up that they know nothing about them.

" Do people just not like them? Or is it people not liking them? " Exactly the same thing - that IS the image issue.

I reckon thereā€™s certainly a problem with a lot of footy people (or at least Essington people) of a certain class or standing.
That problem being they reckon us plebs should all just step into line and tongue theirs just because. That goes for Gauci or Cunningham (running for last yearā€™s board whilst slagging off Blitz as ā€˜internet whackjobsā€™ - great idea!), just as much as coteries.
I may well be wrong, but thatā€™s what Iā€™ve gleaned from 10 years as a member, that there are some rich guys who like to feel involved.

Kaz/Cus spent all of a couple of hours on talking to us plebs and we LOVED it.
Lesson to be learned there: get off your high horse and throw us a bone.
Itā€™s not hard.
If you treat people like crap theyā€™ll generally prove you right.
If you ignore people youā€™re leaving yourself open to people filling in the blanks.

The rich are so misunderstood

by all reports USSR get togethers were debaucherous. doesnā€™t mean they were good leaders.

Iā€™m personally not privy to any inside information, but I have to imagine Rohan ā€œRo Roā€ Connolly isnā€™t far from the truth with this:

"Essendon needs a rebuild of an entire club, not just its football operations. One which will address the lethargy and slow-wittedness of the past 15 years, one which has the guts to put back in their box the various coterie groups and wannabes who exert way too much influence over a foundering clubā€™s direction."

ā€œPaul Littleā€™s likely replacement as Essendon chairman is former Government Minister Lindsay Tanner. In my view, he canā€™t start soon enough. But getting some semblance of order back into a fractured club will be for him a challenge every bit as large as were the powerplays between Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard.ā€

Lol ā€¦ outraged 3 Game Members.

Some people have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to coteries and coterie members. Kind of a reverse snobbery. Fact is they do a lot of good for the club, and are one of the reasons weā€™ve been a powerhouse over the years. Get over it.

As for those who accuse them of undue influence, well thatā€™s a bit rich. Every man and a dog here has an opinion on how things might be run better, and clamouring to have a say in things. Fair enough too, even if some of the notions are bizarre. Unfortunately (or fortunately) most of it goes no further than that for most of us. Iā€™d bet, given the chance, weā€™d be using our influence to whisper in the right ear about how Hird should be kept on, or why he should be sacked - and so on.

Theyā€™re the lucky souls who believe they have some influence, true or otherwise, but they pay for it.

Here have you been the last decade? Rabble in and off the field

Opinion is one thing but when you have power it is your responsibility to use it correctly. Withholding sponsorship $ (and large amounts) until you get your way is not correct.
