Actually, yes. Looking at Geelongs top 3 vote getters in the Brownlow, they each register a very similar number of votes to the Essendon top 3.
Geelongs coach, game plan and defensive system were much better than Essendon; 3 wins and 23 percentage points better, yet in the Brownlow they polled about the same number of votes all up, with their stars about the same individually. The (unique) home ground advantage accounts for a lot of that superiority.
Geelong imo got to a prelim because of a polished system and a great coach not star players, unlike Sydney who got to a Grand final based on lots of star players, whose stars faded on the day that mattered.
