Dons down Dogs - review round 4 of 2024

One more week without Wright and then we get (arguably) our best forward back.

I know one I’ve already read differently tonight but does Davey stay in this team? I’m not convinced…

I’ll dob myself in.
I thought we’d lose by 10 goals minimum regardless of who came in.
Am glad we responded.
And am glad that Scott and the coaching group are trying to balance between winning as many games possible whilst ‘playing the kids’. We need to build a winning attitude and that’ll take some time.

Hep was big in the first half.
I thought Goldy earned 1st ruck. It’s up to Draper to play well enough to get ahead of him. Ditto Bryan.
Great game by Jones. Just needs to continue getting game time into him (AFL and VFL) and he’ll be fine. Cox should follow a similar path (just a different position).
The entire midfield was great. As a unit. No one really dominated but they all worked together to try and get the best result for the team.
The backline stood up. I really didn’t think we’d hold them to 10 goals even if we did break even with their midfield.
The forward line and midfield was great at trapping the ball in our forward line and putting as much pressure on the Bulldogs.

Hopefully we see more games like this through the year and less like last week.

This Friday night feels a bit better than last Friday

Agreed, he’s done well so far. The big test will be later in the year.

Pack of downhill skiers but all were nicely on the slopes tonight!

Tackled manically
Ran harder. Top 6 players on the ground for metes run were all bombers and all ran more than 13km
Won the midfield
Converted on the scoreboard
Won 4 quarters
Jones and Durham excellent
McKay fantastic
Merrett elite

Port is gonna pants many opponents in Adelaide. That’s no excuse for last week but the reaction to that loss was way over the top.
Great reply against a supposed much better list than we have.
Best Adeiaide (won’t be easy) we are 4 and 2

I dont think so. They looked like a different team.
The 1% matter, make the disposal more efficient. Puts score on the board.

Positives:

  • Our F50 press - I’ve envied teams that have this, it’s still not consistent, but it’s a start
  • Quick response after a terrible game last week; Dogs have had the wood over us too
  • Sam Durham - locked down Bont, effective in the guts and snagged a goal too
  • Xavier Duursma - Port are nuts; kids a pure Winger. Going to become a fan favourite
  • Jye Caldwell - So much man love. Contested mongrel and classy/finesse with the ball
  • Ben McKay - another great game. Needs Reid or someone else back there to support him
  • Harry ■■■■■■■ Jones - rapt for him, great game
  • McGrath - loved the anger in the 4th; it shows that we’re not being nice guys for once
  • Cox - we need to be patient with this kid. A slow burn, but huge utility potential
  • Alwyn Jnr - thought he started poor, but became important as the game went on

Negatives:

  • Menzie - simply adds little to no value rn. Needs a spell in the VFL
  • Parish - just looks really ineffective. Kudos for caring for the well-being of Libba though
  • Redman - a shadow of his former self. Is his performance drop related to Martin down back?

For myself, I just wasn’t expecting the outcome, but what surprised me more was our setup.

  • we kept it locked into our forward fifty for a long stretch and didn’t allow coast to coast goals the other way, which has been our MO for years

  • we ran out the game. Even 20 points up in the fourth I was thinking that there is still time for them to get us.

  • we won centre clearances after last week’s smashing, against arguably the second best midfield in the comp based on current form.

  • pressure across the ground was poles apart compared to last week.

As my pre-game comments will attest, I was supremely confident going in, and this team has proven me correct.

Yeah should have handed it off, the commentary was right. You need to build the team spirit, and that would have been a really good and public display of that.

What i love about this win we came in with a plan to blunt Libba and Bont and what do you know we beat them

We always play well in intra club games…

Duz’ 2x centre clearances to spear it onto Stringer’s tit.

I think Langers realised he should have passed it to Jake and felt bad about it. He didn’t celebrate it.
