DP3 & Essendon Vs Racists - ANZAC DAY MATCH 2021 REVIEW THREAD

Has someone got CBAs for the whole match?

We’ve got a real head ache when Caldwell and Shiel come back because I think Caldwell, parish, Shiel and McGrath can only play on ball. McGrath can play half back obviously but that’s unlikely

At least Merrett can play wing well.

Then there’s stringer who gets a lot of CBAs.

Need to remember that and not get carried away with the win.

Get off Pendles

I was watching Pendles, he got a lot of disposals, but he is even slower than ever. He still finds space ( to avoid being tackled) and his team mates always give the ball to him. 5 contested out of 30, with 2 tackles only.
The conjecture in the commentary was that if Collingwood won the game , Pendlebury would get the medal.
TBH, I don’t think he would have deserved it. Sidebottom was much better IMO.

Agree. Definitely felt like I saw more of Sidebottom watching it live. Both were pretty ineffective.

Yeah I know, I’m just stoked cause I predicted at the start of the season that Collingwood would crash and burn and its happening. The worst hasn’t even come yet either lol

Bombers are back.

Sidearse was right in the fray contesting the ball, with 17 contested possessions and 9 clearances. He was having a real crack. None of that opportunist stuff out the back that has been so annoying over the years.

Enough said, Collingwood are losers in 2021 in many respects.

Ham, Hind Wright and Lav all had pretty decent games.
Wright and lav have received some love, but Ham and Hind performances have been missed to some extent., both getting over 20 disposals and contributing, improving.

My understanding was that yesterday he would start at the centre bounces then run forward and play as a forward. In previous seasons they would put him in at the centre bounces and he would have to play as a midfielder around the ground during those periods. I wasn’t at the game but this is what I gathered from the TV and from what the commentators said, i may be wrong though. I think if this is the tactic it’s a clever one because it allows for his low endurance base, but we get good bang for our buck with him being in at the centre clearances where he is elite.

Yesterday was the first time I’ve watched Essendon live since the dogs destroyed us in 2019.

Our defense was under manned, under sized and looked vulnerable all day. Yet it actually stood up pretty well. We coughed up several cheap goals because of poor umpiring or a breakdown in discipline up the field .

  • Grundy ruck free
  • Snelling 50m pen
  • no one running with Cripps from our forward line
  • Redman in the back at half back

That’s nearly a third of their score and There were probably a few others. the back 6 were rarely to blame save for a few occasions (hind fumble, lav ran over the top of the ball, zerk not flying at the top of the scare).

I think positioning, discipline and decision making is vastly vastly improved. There is a clear method on display, defenders would leave their opponent immediately to push up to the ball carrier at top speed if they got out the back of the midfield.

Francis held his depth excellently when on, lav and hepp were never caught out position. Yes zerk gave up a contested mark or two which was frustrating but probably wouldn’t have happened if it were Ridley floating in from the side instead of hepp. Our defenders rarely got isolated deep and Phillips and Wright also pushed back hard to help out.

It was honestly nearly a flawless display from the back 6 IMO even though it felt likely to fall apart at any moment. I think that’s just decades of seeing it happen leading to a bit of PTSD

Considering the cattle we had out I’ll take 20 shots from 43 entries any time

Quaynor is like Darcy Moore - looks very good when allowed to intercept freely, very ordinary when asked to play tightly on their opponent and often beaten in the contest when this occurs.

Sorry, I had the impression that he was always used as a centre bounce specialist and did not play on the ball, except if the ball came his way while he was running forward. I am happy to be corrected if the reverse is the case.

Q50 aye?
We were in Q51.

Not a bad vantage spot to be fair.

That’s a decent contrast.

Also in Q51, row bb. Had a Collingwood lady going mental early on, she was very quiet by the time the game was done
