Dry July

Alright, I'm doing it! For those that haven't heard of it participants elect not to drink alcohol for the full month of July.

I'm not doing it to raise money for cancer or to be popular but for purely selfish reasons, mainly to save money, lose weight and see if I don't go batsh*t crazy without drinking.

I love a drink and couldn't tell you the last time I went a whole week without a drink, maaaaybe I had 5 days off it a few times after some really bad hangovers, I was in the doghouse, on a health-kick or I got my wisdom teeth out or something.

Every now and again I will drink to excess which is another issue but the reason this will be so hard is that my life seems to revolve around alcohol. Most social events that I attend involve drinking at some level. Lunches, birthdays, bbq, football matches, work functions... even social sporting events like going rockclimbing, cricket, basketball etc will be followed by a few beers. Even getting home from work usually requires celebrating with a drink in my household... as does cooking dinner or finally getting to put the kid to bed

So my plan is to learn what life is like without alcohol...

Anyone else doing it? Thoughts? Reckon it would be easy for you? What can I expect?

Edit: Like I said, I'm not doing it to raise money, but here's the link to the official website for those interested in the details.

oooo... dry july. I'll celebrate this with a red. I usually drink white. That's ok isn't it? It's like I'm not drinking because I'm drinking something I don't usually drink. That must count.

I once took a year off the grog. Was very sobering.

Sounds like the worst possible year ever in the history or years!

Is it true you can buy a "pass" which allows you to drink at a cost?

I tried it. Worst 8 minutes of my life.

wannabe good on ya mate. It'll actually be pretty easy if you've already given yourself a timeframe. All you're doing is getting rid of a habit. Whenever you would crack one open, substitute it with something else instead. My weapon of choice is to go for water, however if you are an eight year old child who "doesn't like" water then you could spice it up by drinking it through a bendy straw or something.

Are you farking kidding me?

Good luck, I wish you well. If you need any motivation just think of all the money you’ll save.
It’s not the same but when I gave up meat I found it very difficult for a while but when I felt tempted to give in I found thinking about how much the grocery bills had fallen fired me up again.

People can buy you a golden ticket which allows you a drink. $25 or something.

Yep, like if you're on the forty hour famine you're allowed food but only if you get really hungry.

I think the golden ticket kind of defeats the purpose, for me its about mental fortitude, I don't want any let offs. As I said I just want to prove it to myself, but heaps of people would be doing it for a dare, and I guess if they donate more money it suits the cause. It's run for cancer, not AA.
I think it can be used by people who want to drink and raise money... "I'd love to drink at your bux day mate but you'll have to donate $25 for cancer..."

I’ve been dry this whole year, bar vomiting in my mates backyard on NYE. Although I can’t remember if it was before or after midnight…

Then the mum taxi picked me up!

Good luck though Wannabe.

quitters

This thread is making me thirsty...

But for realsies, I did it in March this year because I drank way too much. It changed me man, it changed me. I don't drink as much as I used to now.

I’m trying not to shop for this entire month. I could give up booze for a much longer period.

If something big happens on the ASADA front, such as they revoke the SC notices, I might be forced to get pretty intoxicated. Just getting in early.

Things that make you go hmmm…

Meeting ‘wannabe’ at the footy, and he pulls out a thermos with grog in it !

Haha…in all seriousness

Good luck with it buddy.

Stick at it for the full month, no cheating.
