Dustin Fletcher, our hero hangs up his cape

The #31 gets packed away with moth balls until a new defender comes through, cements a spot and earns an upgrade from something in the 40s.

I will miss yelling out dusty everytime you got the ball or put on a magnificent spoil.

For consistency and quality you are the best essendon player i have ever seen.

It takes a special king of champion to win a BnF in a premiership side but you did.

Good luck with everything you do from here.

What a pox year this has been

I’m so sad. My all time favorite Essendon player.

No matter what time of the game, or whether we were winning or losing, yelling out 'have a shot" whenever Fletch got the ball was one of the great joys of going to watch Essendon.

Feel like a massive part of my childhood is finally over today (I’m 33, so it was probably over a long time ago). A true changing of the guard.

Farewell Fletch.

Can't believe I sat up and watched the Footy Show!!! Wanted to see some Fletch love and any possible announcement yet, Crawford was the only one who said a word on it.

c*** head Brayshaw actually gave a speech for Chappy (correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure that was last weeks news)

It’s a disgrace Fletch has been almost forgotten and the club have been tight lipped also.

Fletch is the same age as me, for my entire adulthood he has been dominating in the Red and Black. He is/was a superstar that deserves the biggest of send offs!!!

Dermie gave Fletch a good wrap up on League Teams also. Loads of respect.

Not surprised, but still disappointed.

Will never forget Fletch and C McGrath standing on a bench in the bar I worked giving my boss the “Mick is a wanker” treatment after I told them the he was a no good Carlton fan which was why he wouldn’t let me finish early and get on the turps. Circa 2001.

All the best in retirement champ!

Has to come straight back as a coach

We must retire his number, imo

We must retire his number, imo
Put it in mothballs till mason plays
We must retire his number, imo

Straight to Pears next year.

Have you thought that maybe Fletch didn’t want to make a big deal out of it? Maybe he just wanted to retire quietly without fuss?

He obviously didn’t want to do a presser as we only got told via email.

It’s all a rouse.
John Carpenter says Fletch was pushed out the door. He’s been forced to retire.
Heads will roll for this!

A ticket will be fotmed at Fed Square next Friday with the aim of overthrowing the board and reinstating Fletch and Hird.

PS…
Tongue in cheek post.
Too many letters in post to be relevant to John Carpenter.

Wish all the best to Fletch. The only player who I have never had a bad thing to say about his on field performance.

Give it to Stein, or Gwilt

very sad face

We must retire his number, imo
I still remember Paddy saying Fletch was his favourite player and he wanted to take the #31 when he retired...

P1ss off Judas

Shattered but of course all good things must come to an end.

Gonna miss him so much!! Congrats Fletch on an awesome career and hope he sticks around as a specialist defence coach at LEAST!!

Who am I going to shout “Have a shot Fletch!” to now?

The word legend doesn’t do him justice, he is so much more.

What a fkg champion. All the best you legend. Im sure youll be around the club in a coaching capacity.

You could do it with Pears in a pub near a line of tequila shots.

Let’s just keep this thread for singing Fletch’s praises. There should be no distractions from what a champ he was on here, even if it was tongue in cheek.

Also its worth adding that even though this year wasn’t his best, and maybe in hindsight he wouldn’t have played on, it was totally worth it for that goal from the centre square on Anzac Day.

As a supporter you obviously remember great games, and wins and premierships, but quite apart from that, there are little incredible moments in games that you don’t ever forget. For me, that Fletch goal and the reaction of the crowd will forever be one of my favorite ever moments watching Essendon.
