Dutton confirms that Baby Asha will not be returned to Nauru

Congratulations to all those involved in the action that has led to the rethink on sending a baby born in Australia back to Nauru, and that goes for the doctors, including the President of the AMA, the nurses, the protesters and the former refugees who helped supply them with food during their vigil in Brisbane. Hopefully the Government’s change of heart on the appropriateness of off shore detention for children will not be a one off.

Awesome!

Let’s hope it stays that way.

Oh I just read the article. Dutton said they will be going to community detention for now but he expects they will eventually be sent back to Nauru and probably back to their home country.

The bastards still want to pack this baby off under all circumstances. Dutton can rot in hell for his pathetic attitude towards fellow human beings.

So what is the answer to people coming illegally to Australia?

Awesome!

Let’s hope it stays that way.

What a good bloke.

What a wanker.

Firstly, it isn’t illegal to seek refuge, it never has been. Secondly this baby was born in Australia, and for mine that makes her as Australian as me. She’s already been set back to Nauru once against medical advice and fell ill as a result. Let her stay, it’s simple.

So what is the answer to people coming illegally to Australia?

Target the ones who come by plane.

You’re right, like thousands of other mainland refugees, they’re in the clutches of the Immigration Dept- a kind of living purgatory. But Hell is worse than purgatory and that’s where she’d be now if not for the direct action. Border Farce had blocked calls to her room and the private goons were in the hospital. They don’t do that to send people to community detention.
I doubt this is the Minister’s call, this came from someone higher up who’s not keen on images of babies being forcefully taken from hospitals just before he calls an election. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a bit of a sea change in public perception.

For me it would be:

  • Re-establish an Aid agency rather than cut it to is bone and having it tied to DFAT
  • increase our humanitarian visa programme intake
  • work with Indonesian authorities to target the people smugglers

The problem I have with the maritime arrivals is the lack of paperwork many have and the difficulty in identity assuring people.

I agree with your 3 points, especially on aid, but I will repeat that Asha was not a maritime arrival, she was born in Australia. And I refuse to respect the legitimacy of any question that has off shore detention of children as an answer. Some lines should never be crossed.

Not disagreeing GRR but I have a problem with people with no papers to assure identity without reasonable excuse. Talking about the wider issue than Asha - no child should be in detention.

It is the same issue we are facing on the “war on terror”. How far is it okay for the Gov to rip apart our freedoms and unbuilding what out forefathers built for the sake of “protecting” us? Do we have anything left worth protecting when we have pulled apart democracy for the sake of protection?

How far do we go to “protect our borders” when we are locking up children in jail for years on end with no hope, no future and then sending them away again? How many of them will grow up with hatred in their hearts and revenge on their minds?

We could have intigrated them into our society and then built a better, stronger country, one that supports all people groups in our borders. I actually think we are instead building those who will eventually try and destroy us. The very thing this Gov claims they are trying to stop.

And just on a moral issue: we believe we are better than those who seek to hurt and destroy life, but my issue is, is our way of life one that involves the destruction of the soul of a person? Are we giving up our own soul by doing this? Is the cost really worth what we claim we are doing?

If a child is born here, immediate Aus citizenship should be granted and “offshore detention” shouldnt even be a factor, let alone permissable.

Their reasoning is that these people try and illegally get into our country then they have try and have kids here to force us to keep them. So they won’t grant Aussie Cit to not allow them to use the kids as a bargaining chip.

I honestly don’t know what the answer is to accommodating refugees, but I’m absolutely positive that some sort of deterrent should be in place. 1000+ refugee deaths at sea under Labor’s last term in government was completely unacceptable, and ignoring this for political expediency is pretty callous.

What I do know is that the time is takes to process refugees is also completely unacceptable, as are the reported living conditions in these centres.

Proactive democracy wins the day…for now.

Fair bet if we spent 3+ billion a year to track down overstayers we’d manage to catch a few.
But hey … the demonise narrative

Seems she is going after all.

Asylum seeker baby Asha and her family will be returned to Nauru once medical and legal processes are complete, the Turnbull government has vowed.
Asha was released into community detention on Monday morning but Mr Dutton insists her stay in Australia will be temporary.
Protesters outside the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

“I couldn’t be any clearer - once the medical assistance has been provide and the legal issues resolved, people will go back to Nauru,” he said.

Agree on your 1st paragraph.

With the processing, is the issue resources or the difficulty in determining the legitimacy of people who have no evidence to support their claims? Does it take a long time to determine a genuine refugee if they keep the passport they used to fly out of their home countries? Are the people who have been in detention for years still waiting for determination or are the delays caused by appealing the determinations they’ve already been given?
