Easton Wood Speaks Out On Gambling In Sport

More a case of he seems like a good bloke. Only get Vic/Fed news POV these days, so no doubt he’s just a typical pollie looking after his own self-interest.

Let’s just say that until recently he had done a very good job of hiding his anti worker background behind empty stunts and a few well timed “I’m fighting for SA” statements.

The No Pokies senator from SA has never achieved a single thing for either of the interests he claims to represent.

Last seen in solid gold house with unspoiled ocean views rolling around in pile of money.

Ah ok, so just a giant veneer. I’ll dig a bit deeper.

One of the key arguments used to remove cigarette advertising from sport in Australia was the effect on children. Escort sponsored the local preseason VFL comp in Victoria called the Escort Cup. But other states (SA and WA) had different cig brands as their sponsor. As it turns out whichever brand was the sponsor in that state had a much bigger market share and was by far the biggest brand for under-age smokers in that State. So nobody could dispute how effective the coupling of the brand with the biggest sport in the state was on kids.

Also @Darli or anyone else planning to take any action on this make sure you include fantasy AFL (e.g. dreamteam & supercoach) in the discussion. Gambling companies are now offering various stats related micro-bets for example most kicks or head to head fantasy points bets etc. The betting category is called DFS (daily fantasy sports) and has come out of US, but exploded here last year. Micro bets became a big problem in cricket because they can be manipulated easily. This type of betting has prolific ads targeted at folks who play fantasy afl - in twitter threads, official fantasy related emails and websites and apps. None of the media restrictions on gambling ads apply here, so there are even more betting ads than on TV. And again the big problem is that fantasy afl is actively promoted to kids, even encouraged in schools. It very much looks like fantasy sport is seen by the betting companies as grooming kids for early teenage gambling.

They moaned & predicted catastrophe over removing ciggy ad’s, then did the same over alcohol, as did cricket, and it was all BS. So now they are doing it over Gambling. Well fkn yawn, … heard it all before,

Why don’t these fkers find something to advertise that isn’t a frigging vice hey?

Try that for once you cockwombles.

I am 23 years old, and this PC culture has made me hate this country. Who cares about this ■■■■!!!, the AFL is not responsible for what stupid people do with their lives.

Sometimes, people need to be protected from themselves. Even you.

The AFL has an incredible amount of public influence and make a huge amount of money from gambling. They need to take responsibility for their own actions, just as much as any individual.

Its not so much adults that are swayed by the ads, most of them already gamble, its about not getting children desensitised to it. Look at online gaming gambling, namely things like counterstrike where there were sites to ‘gamble’ on the professional games results. admittedly this is kinda indirect gambling, but when the items that can be gambles can also be bought with real money (steam wallet) and the majority of people doing it were kids who got access to their parents’ credit cards. It plants an insidious seed in the minds of the kids and can result in lifelong gambling addictions.

Said it already in this thread but the ads make out that you can’t enjoy football without gambling.

The projected fix is to ban siren to siren broadcasting. It should not affect signage at the ground or odds on the screens at the ground . Will this stop camera shots of the screens? Who gets the revenue from advertising at the ground? Can a club stop such advertising at a home game?

I know. I’m starting to think I’m not doing it right.

What have you been googling, eh? eh?

Only thing I like about Nth Melbourne is that they do not make a cent from gambling. Wish we were the same.

to be fair, you can’t enjoy following Essendon without alcohol and/or illicit drugs.
