A new study on NMC batteries in South Korea, has led to new insights on how batteries degrade when drained too low.
We all know that not draining your battery too low prevents early degradation. However, this study was able to discover more about the process and limits where degradation increase. In one experiment with NMC batteries, just 250 deep discharges to 0% reduced the remaining battery capacity to 3.8% of original capacity.
I just thought it was worth a reminder here, for those driving Tesla’s or older EV battery technology - not BYD’s with LFP Blade batteries.
While Tesla probably handles this all in the continually updated Battery Management System, some older NMC battery EVs, that don’t get frequent BMS upgrades automatically, are probably more susceptible to this.
If you can charge your battery when it reaches 20-30% capacity, it will add to longevity quite significantly.
