I was there. We had lost the first 5 or 6 games and Sheedy was threatening to pull the boots back on. Madden dominated i n the air and gave picken an absute hiding all day. Simon ruled the air that day and kick started our run of 15 straight wins.

We tend to think of that first period of Sheedy as the Watson years, and we are so used to seeing Simon Madden as a genial fellow around the place, that we can forget just what an out and out champion Madden was. He was only 17 when he started in 1974, and went on to play 389 games over 18 seasons. He was the dominant ruckman in the competition for most of that time, an outstanding mark and an underrated but very accurate kick for goal.
