Essendon vs Adelaide - Review

I wouldn’t say until all are banned, but certainly until the bulk are not playing at Essendon. By the end of 2017 this will be the case.

I think we all know we were beaten by a better team, I think it/s about time someone at Essendon has a chat to Peter Schawb.

MCG gave Eddie a lesson last night, best game for the year.

We are three speedy midfielders and one tall back off being a very good team. I think we are a better team with Hartley in it.

Love what Irish brings; sometimes it doesnt work but most often it does.
Marty was solid
LAV has the goods, was involved a lot more tonight, but decision making needs work. It will come, he’s a big unit too.

We look tired, unable to finish each QTR and the game.
TRAV and TIPPA especially seemed hindered.

Time to give MUTCH and BBB a run. Nothing to lose for the last two games. Their enthusiasm will lift us.

There’s probably about 10 players I’d lose before Gleeson.

I disagree with this. A lot

Every game they’ve played in the VFL Howlett, Myers and Bird have absolutely creamed it whilst they’re around the stoppage and done ■■■■ all else. Unsurprising, over their respective careers they’ve been close to 100% stoppage midfielders.
Every game they get picked in the AFL they do a kinda sorta OK job as second string clearance mids and ■■■■ all else.

Every game it’s Mutch, Begley, Redman, even Jerrett who provide the running, the defense and pressure on the flanks, and offer much better disposal and spread. Because they’re predominantly flankers/outside mids (at this stage, in begley’s case).
And that’s what we need, not a fourth/fifth/sixth big slow inside midfielder with poor disposal.
Whilst we’re welded to playing Hepp, Watson, and Goddard we need guys who will complement them.

I don’t think we’ve done that well. At all.

Only if you get out the S and M gear especially the whips.

He didn’t give up or drop his head though, he had a red hot go. All credit to him. I hope we can keep him because he would be gold to another team.

The umpiring was fking disgusting. it’s happening week in week out now. They are not unbiased, fair judges of the game. They turned it into a home game for the Crows and when we go back over to AO, we will get fked over with all the calls. Again.

I hope someone says something. Like Hird in 2004. Make the comment, pay the fine and the awareness gets raised on how bad we are getting treated.

Zerret and Fantasia both offer link and run but you make a good point.

The big issue in the Adelaide game was the inability to get back to position when the ball was coming out of Adelaide’s half back line. Our defenders did pretty well but the mids didn’t make it back to cover theirs. There was almost always someone in a bit of space for them to kick to.

That’s a mix of our half forwards, mids and wings not having the tank or pace to run two ways. Especially late in quarters.

Not sure kids could have helped that but maybe they are fit enough after one pre season.

The reactions here have been pretty extreme. We were playing against the best team in the comp who don’t appear to be lacking in any position on the ground.

Early in the last, with a midfield that was struggling we were still in the game. Slot Raz and Zach in there and we’d possibly be even closer. I have to admit I thought it was going to be our night when Jobe slotted that goal.

Loony played really well I thought. Competed well and was better around the ground.

Criticism of Lav has been harsh. I thought he did some good things. His decision making let him down a bit though. Has only played a handful of games don’t forget.

It was a tough day for our defenders. They can’t be blamed for the lack of pressure from our midfielders though.

I’m pretty optimistic about our future. Our forward line is friggin awesome! We can replace Colyer and Benny with anyone and we’ll be a better team. If Trav gets another game this year though I’ll lose my ■■■■.

Oh, and it’s time for Jimmy Stewart to start kicking more goals than behinds.

I think we’ll be a better side when we defend better in midfield and offer more on the spread.

It’s fair to say Worsfold has his fingerprints all over the Adelaide blueprint, and i think it’s reasonable to suggest he’s trying to develop something similar at Ess.

This is what Adelaide do, only Sloane is really a centre square specialist (and he’s not slow), the two crouches are basically generic inside/outside mids who just run super hard both ways. All 183-187cm ie mid size. Then Cameron gets centre square time, Douglas, Greenwood, Betts etc - not exactly clearance beasts - but all move well, and defend well, and do damage when they get it on the turnover.

With that as the general plan, and with how well they’ve played all year: do you think Watson, Myers, Howlett are much of a loss?
Would they be close to a game at Adelaide or Sydney or GWS?

Could somebody do the stats for red time goals conceded. Want it confirmed once and for all that we are the worst for conceding red time goals statistically in the comp. Particularly bad last night.

Because the players head hit the ground. With our luck Howlett will be reported. The AFL are having this big thing on tackles now and that tackle may be found to be illegal. The umpire said, “I know but I have to pay a free against you his head hit the ground.” ALL players have to learn to tackle differently or stop completely tackling the old way. Its all about protecting the head and concussion.

The difference between the teams was very clear when kicking the ball in from a behind or clearing from the last line of defence. We seemed very cramped with no space, movement, or options downfield. The Crows had large spaces to run into on their half back line and suddenly it seemed like we had 12 players on the field. Once we gave them the ball there wasn’t much work in getting to zoning positions. Far too slow and they picked the midfield apart with ease in transition.

Crows continually work hard to get someone to be an overlap player/extra in defence. Hence they always seem like they have someone in space.

When is Brodie Smith out of contract? That guy is next level

Thats the thing, everyone wants to play the kids but when they come in and don’t perform they crack the sads. Our kids are not ready, and can and have been developing well in the VFL. When the “kids” tear it up in the VFL they can come in. Many are showing good signs, Kobe, BBB, Francis, and Langford. But they are not yet as good as the so called slow plodders we have in the side.

Liked Woosha presser, showed a little emotion. Especially when stupid questions were asked. Seemed disappointed .

Deflating loss but at least they fought it out despite the crazy number of red time goals at the end of EACH quarter!

But seriously, 96 of Adelaide’s 123 points were scored from turnovers with a lot of those mistakes coming from just dumb footy
