He plays best angry. Hird said as much, that he needed a rev up at half time, then he came out and dominated. Problem is this rage quickly leads to frustration at the centre bounces. If he can work out how best to mentally approach the game, he’s got the tools to be a dangerous player.
VFL player.

Agreed, but I think we need to keep him for one more year as cover if both TBell and Looney go down.
Not sure there are better options out there, but hopefully we can pick someone youngish who can develop to the point where they are a better option in 12 months.
VFL player.
Your probably right.
But every now and then he teases that he could be something more.
Smack is what he is and he ain’t gonna be what he ain’t.
He is so frustrating because he is one of the most talented players on the list. If he was 5cm taller he would be a brilliant ruckman... but he isn't. The only way he makes it is as a forward and he has struggled there. I like him between the two 50 metres playing as a mid as someone else has suggested. His problem is all the coaches see his talent but they don’t know where to play him.
I think we just write off 2016. He was clearly injured. for me he gets another 12 months and unless he proves himself once and for all he is gone.
He infuriates me and it is hard to keep the faith but I still reckon there is a player in there somewhere.
His problem is he’s not big enough to ruck, and doesn’t read the play or mark the ball well enough as a forward.
I don’t think he’s particularly talented. Certainly not top five as you’ve said. He’s a handy stop gap, and that’s about it. Expectations have been way too high for Smack. There is a good reason Adelaide delisted him two years ago. He’s just not that good.
He is also very good at ground level for a big man, and is a beautiful kick, his kicking is a weapon actually. Too short and not a big enough leap to be a ruckman. Not great hands and reader of the play to be fwd. All his best attributes don’t fit his size. He actually could be a good inside mid but its a bit oversize for that.
His only hope is as a fwd, but he would need to improve in a couple of areas to make it a senior level. In a team with quick ball movement he may have a chance. No fwd can thrive with slow ball movement, all our fwds struggled in 2015 for that reason. He is such a nearly good player.
His weird size makes him a beast hff because he can basically make 50/50 marking contest into a scrap and he’ll probably win the scrap if he can’t take the mark.
Smack is what he is and he ain't gonna be what he ain't.
“As long as he doesn’t go where the ball ain’t” quote from Jack Dyer… RIP

Rather Francis thanks.

Can you please put it more simply.
He is known quantity, and that hasn't been much this season. l would rather take a punt on a new ruck, than risk a repeat of the same.As others have stated, found it hard to get a game when the team was decimated and even then, wasn’t very convincing when he had the chance. You would like to think that team management know something that we don’t.
I would hazard a guess that our pick 19 will be the best ruck option available.
I think given he was taken out of the VFL finals and put in for surgery suggests 2 things.
- He will be on the list next year.
- He was severely hampered by injury this year.
Keep in mind he came top 10 in the B+F in the 1’s with a full squad in 2015. He must have had something going on with his body in 2016 that restricted him to so few games. Coaching staff must believe he is capable of getting back to 2015 form and a 1 year deal is probably worth the risk.
Plus when he played in the first few rounds it was as a permanent forward, which does not seem to be a role he’s suited to. His best form has been in the ruck, where he’s been pretty poor at the actual ruck contests (given away a lot of frees), but excellent in his attack on the ball and general ability to get it going our way, as well as taking marks around the ground.
I see him as a big ruck-rover, not a knock ruckman, although he can pinch-hit as one. I’m glad it seems he’s going to be retained. If he’s fit and used properly, he can be a real asset.
But you’d never play him as a ruck rover. How is he going to be more of an assett in the middle than Watson, Heppell, Myers, Hocking, Howlett, Goddard, Stanton, Kelly or even most of the young developing inside mids.
There are going to be a lot of players vying for on-ball positions. Those who are fittest and in the best form will be selected. There are 5-7 on ball positions, depending on how the coach wants to play it. McKernan at his best is worth one of them.

Smack is an enigma.That’s racist.
Wot?
Enigma: something that is mysterious or puzzling.
I could be wrong but I believe “Enigma” is an old old wooden ship used during the civil war era.
I can’t see McKernan as anything but injury cover.

When did we have a civil war?
Who won?

When is the last list logment? When do we have to sign Shaun McKernan by?
I think 9 November.
Do you think we retain him Fog?
