For his own self-belief he kind of has to. Make himself believe. In the post race interview he was pretty clear that he thought he had no chance at passing Piastri.
To be fair, that is the logical emotional response. They expected a 1-2 finish. It would have been the first time any team did that since 1980 odd at that circuit. They shouldn’t care over the order.
So, if one gets an engine error and DNFs, then if I was them I’d be more upset at missing the 1-2 than the win. The win was expected, and who wins is really only important to some of the garage specific members. For the broader McLaren team what is unexpected is the DNF and who gets the win is less important.
And on the restart penalty
I don’t want to tell you how to do your job @Bomb_Doe but I was forced to go the F1 website just now to check if it’s a race week…

It was not an incident that put him out of the race.
Was that incident or inchident?
I tried to listen to a podcast called Missed Apex and had to turn that one off. Got too much.
I generally listen to The-Race. Also they have a great retro podcast, Bring Back V10s. Very nerdy, but they know their stuff.
I’d want one if I was 5.
Geez, I remember those V10 engines. I went to the Grand Prix in South Australia and I remember coming up to the track when practice was on and the sound hit me in the face and it felt like my heart was going to jump into my throat. It was so loud, I friggin loved it.
Just going to get worse and worse with the ICE engine horsepower drop with the 2026 regulations. 50/50 ICE/electric horsepower.
Reminds me of the video of Hamilton turning his head during an interview when there was a few laps of an older F1 car.
Found it. From ~52 seconds.
It was like that at the first few Melbourne GP’s as well. Also leaving the track and clothes smelling like fuel.
About 15 -16 years ago Zhuhai hosted rounds of the world endurance sports car races (LM class). The first year Lamborghini V10s won. They were by far the loudest of any car on the track it didn’t matter where l was standing/sitting etc. when one of those things went by you heard all about it, unmistakeable.
I fell in love with F1 when backpacking through Europe early 90’s and I went to a few races. The sound and smell of power.
Even drag racing does it.
Geez. Sounds alot like the Bazball moral victories the Poms have had in the ashes.
How exactly do you look quicker but go slower? Make “zooooom” noises down the straight?
and we have a race weekend this… weekend, in Italy. Home of all things wonderful and special.
and of course the track is shaped like a boot…
Melbourne times
You think whoever is on pole is going to be hard to beat here. And good luck keeping up with the mclarens
I’m pretty sure the last five pole sitters have not won the race.
Ok. That’s hopefully an indication of a bit more excitement.
