The “advantage” is quite simply the first right of refusal.
Forgetting the points value for now… if he’s bid on at a pick we don’t have, we still have the option of taking him. An option that you don’t have (guaranteed) for any one else.
While the value of that bid is set, the “cost” to get to that value is not but that cost is likely to still be less than where the player is valued. I.e. it likely costs less to get pick 10 & pick 16 than it does to get pick 5.
if I may, we’re likely in a really precarious position with potential multiple club tied talents making it seriously difficult to match.
If it were one, sure, trade potentially a top 4 pick for two that go close to matching the Koby bid. but trying to do that agin for Tevita and then Moustafa means we probably need to prioritise two of the three and even then may prove difficult.
I think I understand what you are saying in that drafting Bewick will be no different to matching it with picks, I just cant explain it right now.
if I were Matt Rosa, I would be building into that draft. Try and trade the 2025 draft picks into bonus picks in 2027. picking up firsts in 2026 along the way.
Obviously difficult with Tassie having multitude of picks inserted (12th place usually has pick 8 but may end up 14 or whatever due to Tassie picks for example.. I know, numbers may be different but point remains)
You’ll have a heap of father sons and nga’s passed over by this new rule, which is probably a good thing for the integrity of the draft. If a club stockpiles top picks, their player is bid on and a more talented player is still available, the club should take the more talented player and let their academy player slide.
We don’t need to spend two first rounders on him if we finish low on the ladder. We would just need to pick him with our draft pick or have a second pick that would allow us to have sufficient points to match.
The whole 2 pick requirement is a furphy because it’s ignoring where your actual draft pick lands.
Thinking about it. If anything this still advantages sides finishing higher on the ladder.
If you have a pick in the top 5, from ladder position, you’re presented with having to trade back to ensure you have two picks to get your F/A or NGA as theyre more likely to be bid on post you pick. Versus, finishing higher up the ladder and needing to only trade in 1 pick to potentially reach as far as the top 5.
There is no scenario where you would need pick 2 and 12 to match a bid unless they completely change everything which even then would be ridiculous. If you have pick 2 we are going to be able to match a bid at pick 1.
Under this year’s draft points to match pick 1 with pick 2 you would need an extra 220 points (using a 10% discount) which is pick 41. Even if the discount was completely removed it would be picks 2 and 27 to match.
Why are we required to trade for a pick to match Bewick? We are likely to have a pick that will land in the range close to where he is picked. Therefore we can 1. Use this pick to select Bewick or 2. Trade it for points to use to match the bid on Bewick
