You’re right - it was a typo on my part (I was referring to Bewick’s draft which is 2027)
Yes I get that. But that’s a different scenario and is effectively what the AFL has spoken about stopping.
By 2027 there will be no discount and you will only be able to match with 2 picks.
So I was a fair bit off with 2 and 12, but it’s still a high price to match at pick #1
- picks 2 and 27
- picks 3 and 18
- picks 4 and 13
- picks 5 and 11
- picks 6 and 9
- picks 7 and go into defecit
Anyway, my main point was that whichever combo of those picks we use would only yield a player ranked 8-14 spots lower in the actual draft order. And we’d be getting Bewick, who looks every bit a genuine top 5 prospect in that pool. So we’d be giving up somewhere between the 10th + 41st ranked players and the 14th and 23rd ranked players to get a top 5 played.
Bargain.
not required but fear if we want to attempt to take all three club tied to us in 2027 we’ll likely need multiple firsts.
I posted this as a response to a similar thing in the NGA thread:
Just for a spitball on this, if Koby was pick 1, Rodan 10 and Darwish 15 (due to players being out of the pool via Tasmania pre-list / mini draft rules), we would need:
- 5249 draft point and we would only be able to use a maximum of 6 picks (2 per bid) to match.
That would mean needing a collection of picks like 4, 17, 19, 21, 25 and 31 (but that is with Tassie also having picks 1, 3, 9 and access to trading 5, 7, 11 and 13)
Gonna be virtually impossible to get all three without giving up a lot to get those picks (although, perhaps it might go the other way where draft points are worth more than the players so clubs are willing to give them to get into future or previous drafts?)
Thank goodness Brisbane are not impacted this year
They don’t currently have enough points to match a bid at pick 3, so at least they’re going to have to lose something
I’m interested to see what sort of defect they let you carry over to the following year.
That said I’d be very surprised if they all ended up that high. Becomes alot easier if you’re looking at pick 3/12/20, etc.
Alot can happen in 2 years.
There was something about the allowable defecit coming down, but I can’t remember to what.
The reason I’m concerned about them all going high is due to the talent that will be pre-selected out of the draft. They may be nominall the 5th, 25th and 30th ranked players, but that might mean they’re 1st, 11th and 16th on draft night (even though that’s the extreme version of what could happen).
As you say - there’s a lot that changes between 16s and 18s
Yeah I get you.
On the plus side, I believe they have 2 years to take 17 year olds so they’ll likely want to split it. Might only have 5 or so missing from the 2027 draft pool.
Add that to the fact there’s always a few highly rated 17 year olds that just don’t come on, may not be as bad as it looks at first glance.
Yeah absolutely - the Giants haul of 17 year olds were pretty 50/50. Some stars and some never going to play AFL types.
There are 5x 2027 prospects that look really good (like top 10 in draft) who’s birthdates fit the eligibility criteria used when the Giants pre-selected.
It’s actually just great that we’ll have access to Bewick in amongst all that Tasmanian carnage
Most of the Giants picks looked good 18 months out too. Kids develop a lot in their last year and a bit before the draft. Drafting even at18 is very hard, having to make the picks without that year of performances to form your decision making is REALLY tough. Take a gander at the 2020 draft if you have any doubt on that…
And watch for the AwFL to change the FS rules whenever the next gun FS comes up for Collingwood/Brisbane/Geelong or other favoured clubs.
That’s absolutely true!
If it’s the same as GC and GWS they will also only be able to take 17yr olds born in January to April. And who accept their offer.
Remember Josh Toy?
Absolute freak of a junior. I played against him a few times.
Shame he never had a fair go at a career with his heart condition.
James Hird Academy certificates of completion for 2025 were handed out this week.
From left, top:
Alex Alessio (19 yo), Tristan Leeds (2025 draft), Coen McGrath (26, son of Cory), Divjot Singh (25), Jono Leeds (25), Koby Bewick (27), Jad Naim (26), Zac Merhi (25)
Bottom: Tevita Rodan (27), Huss & Sweid (25), Musty Darwish (27)

The 4 certainties at the front, with obviously bewick up the back and naim, who is my predicted surprise packet next year.
I never really rated him, but his recent games for the bha were really good I thought as a midfielder. You’d also think he’d keep growing coz his brother was in the 190s and a good footballer too. He’s a beautiful kick and the type of tall, skinny player with midfield potential that recruiters like. Justice appears the one that is missing in the photo.
Who are the Leeds?
