Ah right, yes. Tassie will have a good idea who the best kids are no doubt.
My point earlier was that whether it be through miss-identifying talent or players opting to not join as a 17 year old, the bottom few clubs (aside from Tassie) will likely still have some very good options available.
I suspect we will be in that bottom few again next year, and thus have access to some strong talent (Bewick at a minimum).
What are your thoughts of the way Calder are using him (as the offensively geared half back)? I know he’s a bottom ager and therefore more likely to fill ancillary roles, but I can’t help but think half forward/wing would be a better use of his attributes (and a better way to develop him overall).
I did note he spent some time on the wing (and even at some centre bounces late) last weekend.
Love your work and efforts keeping the fans abrest of all things Essendon.
Koby has a high IQ, think the ball coming at him suits him better than making the play in space. That HFF role could be a grave yard for a player of his skill set. By putting him in the firing line (HBF) we play through his strengths and keep him involved.
Maybe, just maybe when we improve, then that hybrid HF/midfield role could be his one day.
thought we recognised the face on @noobermensch video of Koby from the weekend, think we can spot @CJohns too in there on the boundary at one point also
Playing the Bailey Dale sort of role will suit him for now I think that’s his entry to AFL before a midfield move. He will play plenty of midfield time next year I think this is his best role for right now.
I guess there’s a difference between what’s best for his development and what’s best for Calder as a team. Midfield might be best for his development, but I think his lack of defensive instincts and his lack of physicality makes playing through there a bit difficult right now. You’d need to have others to cover for him.
Half back allows him to use his game intelligence to read the play and guarantees an amount of space for him to attack and use the ball… but I think one of his best assets is his clean skills and quick decision making in traffic which is being a bit wasted down back. I’d like to see him on a wing or a forward flank.
HB suits him for now. But, I hope he pushes more into a defensive side sweeper/outlet role around stoppages in general play through this year though. It would make the most of his talents whilst putting him in a position where he will have to work on the defensive aspects too. Obviously having some exposure to CBA would aid his development, but starting off the HBL and pushing up aggressively is a good role for him.
