Tucking the head down, while he burns of his opponent…
Alwyn Davey 2.0
Probably the best comment of the week!
if Alwyn Jnr is the better one then i am off for a cold shower. Bring on 22 draft
geez we are going to have some more talented indigenous kids added soon
Daveys, Moore, Wanganeen, etc
Tippa will be a massive mentor for these guys, if he isnt already with their training done with the club.
Hopefully Lachie Johnson can show a bit more like that goal last week.
Think for the VFL kids like Hird, put some better players around them and they may look better too.
Hopefully mozzie gets his knee right too.
There are a few recent examples of quality indigenous small forwards making an impact (best 22) in their first or second years.
How long before we see these two playing for Oakleigh u19s, or will they have to play through the u17s first?
19th of June when Xavier College has a bye might be their best bet. Oakleigh is a hard squad to crack in the 19s though
James Hird’s coaching legacy to Essendon is on the verge of running a lot deeper following events at a Hawthorn oval last Saturday week.
It was where a goal was kicked that one long-time Xavier College watcher in Shane Healy described as the best he’s seen at the school’s Roach Oval, and it came courtesy of a 17-year-old named Jayden Davey.
Essendon supporters are allowed to become excited given Jayden is the son of Alwyn “Froggy” Davey, the sublimely talented small forward who played exactly 100 games for the Bombers, the last few courtesy of Hird’s foresight in 2013 (father/son qualification is 100 games).
But wait, there’s more, as Jayden’s identical twin brother, Alwyn Jr, also played in the game, the boys being Year 11 students at Xavier after being brought to the school under cultural scholarships from Darwin.
Matthew Egan, All-Australian centre half-back in 2007 when at Geelong, runs the football program at Xavier (who sit equal with Scotch College on top of the ladder after five rounds), but in 2013 he was Alwyn Davey Sr’s line coach at the Bombers.
“No doubt ‘Hirdy’ was amazing like that, looking after people and family, plus the twins were always around the club and it was obvious they had some unique skills which we are now seeing,” Egan, 37, said.
Alwyn Davey Sr, 37, whose brother Aaron “Flash” Davey was a star with Melbourne, hopes to travel from Darwin to watch his sons soon.
Alwyn Davey Jr, his twin brother Jayden and Jobe Watson (centre).
“Jayden was in his first game back after 18 months out with a knee injury, so it was exciting they both got a few kicks. They were homesick when they first went down but at least they had each other. Now they love the place,” said Davey Sr, who works with the Clontarf Foundation in Darwin.
“Alwyn is a half-forward/mid who kicks right foot, while Jayden is a left-footed forward who loves kicking goals. We all barrack for the Bombers and love the club.”
Alwyn Davey in action in 2013. The year James Hird helped get him to the magical three-figure number in games.
Essendon recruiting boss Adrian Dodoro will have the opportunity to select the twins in next year’s AFL national draft.
There’s more football talent in the Davey clan with 14-year-old Alijah to join his brothers at Xavier next year plus other siblings in Cruz, 8, and sisters Charlize, 5, and Layla, 1.
Alwyn Davey Jr has been turning heads at Xavier College.
Should Alwyn Jnr and Jayden Davey play senior AFL footy, they will become the 12th set of identical twins to do so in the past 60 years.
Shane and Daryl Wakelin combined for the most AFL games (513) ahead of Matthew and Steven Febey (401) and Brad and Chris Scott (383).
Others include Mitch and Nathan Brown, Adam and Troy Selwood, Nathan and Ryan Lonie, Alistair and Stewart Lord, Mike and Steve Richardson, Simon and Paul Atkins, Ed and Nick Lower, Michael and Nigel Kol, and Ben and Max King
In the case of the Davey twins, so alike are they that if their father sees them 20m away, he just yells out “Alwyn”.
“If he doesn’t turn around then I know it must be Jayden,” Alwyn Snr laughed.
I give Hird a lot of credit for a lot of things… but getting Davey to 100 games is a long bow to draw.
In fact he nearly f*cked it up. Davey was one injury away from being stuck on 99 games. Hird waited until the last game of the season to play him in his 100th.
It was imperative that we got Davey to 100 games, as he already had 4 sons(?).
What are the chances of getting both?
100%.
99%. Always have to allow a 1% chance the AFL arbitrarily changes the F/S rules for ■■■■■ and giggles.
They’re a good size already, hopefully they focus on their building their tanks in the final two years, I don’t want to have to wait a couple preseason before they’re AFL fit
The tank for both is the biggest one, their best chance of improving it will be in Victoria though which is good
Both will play positions where they need a big tank too, pressure small and outside mid/wing
What are the chances of getting both?
Given that Essendon is the only club that can guarantee them both playing together then i would say it was pretty good
They’re a good size already, hopefully they focus on their building their tanks in the final two years, I don’t want to have to wait a couple preseason before they’re AFL fit
Pushing 180cm, you reckon?
99%. Always have to allow a 1% chance the AFL arbitrarily changes the F/S rules for ■■■■■ and giggles.
50/50 for mine.
The AFL is documented as wanting their sheep customers to barrack for the AFL, not any individual team. Essendon getting both of these players would be contrary to that.
Rules are there to be broken.
Jobe is 191cm. They have to be 181cm+ going by that photo.
New father-son rule that you can only pick one Twin!
