Favourite Album For Each Year Of The 90s

all three are good.the reason they are a great band is multiple top albums. vs is another absolute gem.

but seriously 10. it made the band. its a massive massive rock album. arguably as important as nevermind.

its subjective. I just dont understand the argument.

Have a read of rs in terms of its readership and the regard for the album.

1990: The Chills - Submarine Bells , probably in my Tope 5 most listened to albums of all time
1991 : Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
1992 : Kitchens of Distinction - The Death of Cool , one of the great unheralded guitarists in Julian Swales. All of their albums are well worth a listen esp. if you like the idea of gene splicing The Smiths with Ride.
1993: The Auteurs - New Wave , Luke Haines seems like an arrogant twat but he can write some beautiful baroque pop mixed with, as the title says, the best of new wave.
1994: Jeff Buckley - Grace , an era defining album. It spawned many pale imitators (Cordrazine, Geneva…) but it easy to forget how unique this sounded when it first hit in 1994.
1995: Radiohead - The Bends, I still prefer this over OK Computer but both are amazing.
1996: Weezer - Pinkerton .
1997: Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. They released and continue to release gem after gem and this is simply another. Can be hit or miss though live thanks to their unfortunate propensity to jam which is always more fun to do then to listen to.
1998: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, My second favorite in this list a near faultless vision of an album. Jeff Magnum must have decided that as well and simply downed tools after it’s release, the ultimate mic drop.
1999:Built to Spill - Keep It Like a Secret. If guitars float your boat you have to have some Built to Spill in your collection and this, Live or Perfect From Know On are great places to start.

Again tough list to build and look forward to checking out some of those that are unfamiliar on others rankings.

I Kicked a Boy is just a fantastic track and there are plenty of others on that album. Great pick!

Love a lot of what you listed here. This exercise got me a thinking though. I teach high school kids for a living and can tell you they are rapidly losing all conceptual understanding of what an album actually is, it’s the era now of the playlist.

Are we ready to do the 2000’s yet?

Despite all the naysaying in this thread, the first half of the 2000’s is pretty damn good, I’d say better than the last half of the 90’s.

It does get pretty slim after 2005 though, but still makes for some difficult choices, even if the quality isn’t the same.

That’s old-school Mink level surreal.

I have them on vinyl. I just look at them now. Look and remember.

This is like those short stories in ten words or less…
Are you saying you only had two albums to listen to for thirteen years?

Many albums but listened to, only two. Sadness ensues. Mournful wail. I must depart. Do not reply.

Did they release the same album each year for a decade? Or am l doing this wrong?

They did. What a time to be alive.

Edit: I will also be quiet now. There are some great memories in this thread.

Up to 1995 now.
It’s taken a while.
And I will say this.
■■■■ me, Jagged Little Pill is a great album.

If Bob Dylan, or…I dunno…just a guy …released it, people would be talking GOAT.

Happy International Women’s Day.

Heartwork, is fantastic. It was very close for mine, in a year of amazing albums, metal and otherwise.

Wow. I’d never have picked it.

This is such a sad thread, in a way.

To think that the very first few gigs I was fortunate enough to go to, I was seeing bands that were making and playing the music I still love today.

At the time, it didn’t seem like it was that special, because you’d guess that the good times would never end, that music would always be that good. Never cared if you missed a gig, or got too drunk to really remember it, you’d just see them next time they toured…

And then they went mainstream, they killed themselves, they broke up, became irrelevant or a some sad parody of their former self and continued to tour albeit a bit ■■■■.

I don’t think I’ll ever not listen to the music I loved from 89-94 and just think it was all down hill from there :frowning:
