Former #10 Sam Weideman

We should ask for more.

Agree he should not be suspended.

LOL. He didn’t even initiate the contact.

That is ridiculous!

It’s a free kick to Weide for taking his legs out

It’s wild how different everyone can see things these days.

Personally - I think he’s in trouble and not surprised by the suspension handed out. There’s a very slight brace when he realises contact is going to be made. More importantly he doesn’t have his hands down to pick up the ball which makes it hard to explain what he was trying to do other than bump. It’s unfortunate that the other guy has slid in and meant that contact was always going to be to the head. But if Weid is not actually making a play on the ball - which I can’t see him doing - he’s in trouble.

I’ll buck what seems to be the consensus view here but I reckon he does veer into Lemmey enough for it to warrant scrutiny with the way things are these days around impact to the head.

I don’t think it deserves three weeks though. Lemmey played out the game I’m pretty sure. One week seems more appropriate.

Weid.

Geez weve seen some ridiculous suspensions given out to our players over the years and yet that would have to be the worst of them all. Carlton player not only initiated contact he literally dived head first to take out the legs. Once again, suspension based on outcome rather than the act itself. Pathetic AFL.

In two weeks our VFL backline has gone from having Reid, Weid and Hayes to just having Hayes remaining.

Baldwin’s return will offset it a bit I suppose.

Regardless of the eventual length of the suspension, it applies to both AFL and VFL level.

Unless you’re Sydney (AFLW + VFLW).

I just watched the footage, and was waiting for the infringement…… then the footage ended.

They can’t be serious can they?

I was the same. I am still trying to understand how you can be charged for bracing for contact, he didn’t leave the ground and had every right to contest. It is the other guy who drops to the ground and creates the high contact.

They literally would prefer 2 players to get injured instead of one bracing them self at the last moment to avoid it.
Its getting ridiculous.

I get protecting the head but Lemmey causes the contact himself by slipping. There’s no dirty play here at all.

I see this being overturned. Weid sorry, rot in the VFL.

I know this comes up in rulings all the time, so this isn’t directed at you, but it’s absolutely ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  insane that bracing for impact is considered a smoking gun. Especially when what Lemmey is doing, sliding into a ground ball contest when the opponent is upright, is a premeditated infraction. Why should Weideman be expected to predict his opponent is going to give away a free kick rather than enter the contest on his feet like he’s supposed to?

That said, the reality of whether Weideman misses a few VFL games or not is not of huge concern to me.

It’s more about what says about aussie rules football.

A bloke running for the ball with eyes on the football, has just received a 3 game suspension.

That is a disgrace in the name of football.

He didn’t even slip, he deliberately slid on his knees to go for the ball, whereas Weideman is braced for a shoulder to shoulder bump to contest the ball. Shouldn’t even be a free kick, play on.
