They clearly didn’t want to delist the guy and we needed the list spot.
Clearly a few with contracts very lucky.
But as the last guy added to the list is it really that big of a deal considering how young we are already, and bereft of mature talent.

Highly unlikely… nek minnet
Does anyone know which management represents Will Setterfield?
This could also be looking after a player of a certain agent/manager which gets us in the mix for a prospective Free agent etc
I think that’s closer to the mark
I don’t mind Setters but this decision doesn’t make sense to me given who we just drafted + his injury history.
I know it’s essentially a temporary contract given it’s as a result of an LTI (Martin) but still.
This decision makes perfect sense. Martin needs someone on the injury list to keep him company.
Take Setterfield then immediately put him on the LTI list!
This Club will never learn! ![]()
better balance than parish merrett shiel……..
I’d hope that, at this stage of our cycle, we have enough salary cap to carry the extra player.
$200k and a list spot for “mentorship” is downright outrageous.
If there is a single game this year where Setterfield plays 1s and Sharp plays in the 2s I will… well not really do much other than come onto Blitz to complain about it.
What if Sharp plays the first 10 games and is not performing and Setterfield is dominating the VFL?
Such a very low ceiling this move has.
Based on his injury, I am not sure Setterfield will be ready to play again until about mid-year.
That is Blitz speculation. Surely, he will be ok to go early season, otherwise why would they even bother?
It’s all about the future.
I would rather pump another 10 games into Dyson
I am all for playing kids, but I am also for making them earn their spots.
There is no guarantee that any of the kids we drafted will become good players. Setterfield himself was a pick 5, as was Tsatas. Like they say, once you’re drafted the number no longer means anything. You need to earn your spot by at least showing something special, even if it is not consistent yet.
This isn’t correct
He’s had the 2nd stage surgery late Oct/early Nov which is 6-8wks in a moonboot. He’d be built up from there and in full training well before season starts.
Assuming no complications anyway
…
I would have preferred to look elsewhere other than Setterfield.
If the reasoning is because of mentoring, then I get the thought process even though I don’t agree with it.
We got Goldy in to guide our rucks whilst there was doubt with Draper and hopefully that’ll pay off with Bryan and Vigo. Like it or not he was as much of a specialist coach as any other specialist coach. He was just sitting on our list instead of in the box.
We have the worst defensive minded midfielders and it’s obvious that our midfield worked better when Will was in it rather than when he wasn’t. So hopefully he works with our rookie midfielders as well as Tsatas and Kako on how to work as well defensively as offensively ancross this pre-season and they take the next step. Our older midfielders are too far gone to change their habits.
GWS did a similar thing where they used list spots as ‘playing assistant coaches’ because there’s only so much coaches can do with a large young group of players coming through. Didn’t mean they didn’t get the odd game though.
So if it’s an early signing, I’m assuming that’s the reasoning which is semi reasonable (although I’d still prefer other options). If we wait until February and invite others to compete for the spot, then it means we’re opening up a list spot opportunity. Which is completely different. I’d hope Will didn’t out perform the others but given our defensive deficiencies, he’ll be viewed favourably by the coaching group.
We’re getting younger. Which means more coaching is needed at both VFL and AFL. And we’re not in a position like Richmond who have a handful of premiership winners on their list playing a high majority of games whilst the younger players develop around them.
