Former #2 Big Sammy Draper

No ill will towards big Sam but glad we moved him on and cashed in while we could.

Blaki look promising as does Bryan + 2MP provides solid back up

Your first line is correct, but the second line is way off. Wim might think he is Simon Madden (my words, not his) but I doubt Bryan and Vigo get to his level. What they might do though is be 1 level below but much more consistent and do more team things and less flashy crap.

That may be so but if we had have got the same compo as what West coast did with Allen (and we 100% should have) then it is Sam Who?

Me too but I can’t stop smiling about this.

I would argue those things are what will make them 1 level higher than Draper.

There’s no point in doing a flashy thing maybe once every five weeks if you can’t do the basics well.

Nick Bryan is a good field kick and VIGO looks to have some genuine forward craft. It’s not like they are just guys who can compete in ruck contests and offer nothing else.

They’ve both got lots to work on but so do lots of other players at Essendon.

Drapers best is A grade but his body can’t maintain it, his actual value is determined on output not potential.

That’s where I think we go wrong a bit with our rating of senior players.

He might get a flag - although he will likely be injured on the sidelines if Brisbane go the threepeat.

How could a stress fracture only keep him out of round one. Sounds like it’ll be a much longer recovery period.

Depends on the exact location and severity. If it is a spot where they think it’ll fully heal and was caught early, I guess it is feasible. It’s been given six to eight weeks, and you can return from some complete fractures of certain bones in that time.

Is the layoff and rehab for the stress fracture going to help or hinder the issue with his achilles?

It’s likely the caution accompanying the healing process of the serious stress reaction in his right foot, will undermine the recovery of the ruptured right achilles - eg limitations on calf strengthening which is not helpful. He’s copping both barrels.

Yeah thats not good. I would be nice to see him have a full season at his best. I guess at the end of the day Brisbane knew he was injury prone and took a chance on him.

um … isn’t that what you’re doing here when you claim his best is A grade. His best is flashy brilliance, but he is far from an A grader

Take the comment however you want to.

He also doens’t play as well if his fitness is down, so a long layoff, limited run up to pre season and now a setback which will get him off his feet again. I can’t see him having any real impact outside a few highlights before late in the season.

Are you suggesting that Brad is a resultist?

I’m not that fussed he left. You don’t overpay ruckmen, unless they are Max Gawn level. Look at the Premiership ruckmen of the last 10 years, various journeymen and solid competitors. Darcy Fort and the The big O weren’t on much coin at all., neither was Nank, Collingwood offloaded Grundy and promptly won a flag. The only thing that ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  me off is we put a lot of faith, time and development into Draper when he couldn’t even hold a footy properly.

He will have his highlights and big games but it’s a big IF on his body and if he will ever develop the footy nous. He still is clueless at times. He started to mark the ball better at times but still inconsistent. I’m sure the lads will miss him he’s a real personality.
