Former #29 - Jake Kelly

What, you didn’t like his Matera-esque games thundering down the wing?

One thing I am excited for next year is our backline will look a lot faster I think especially if Saad and roberts takes the spots

So the quality of a poster is defined by the abuse they direct at players of a higher quality. As far as l’m aware Jake Kelly is a decent guy who gave his best.

Jake Kelly or anybody else in his role would’ve defended dangerous small forwards half as often if the peanuts further up the field could effectively slow down opposition ball movement once in a while.

If we defended the field well and challenged opposition structures with aggressive ball movement there would be no need for a one dimensional Jake Kelly-type small defender in the first place.

How much better would the backline function if the midfield/forwards up the field applied pressure and stopped the ball moving freely.

Applying pressure up the field gives time and space for our defenders to get in position to intercept and rebound but instead they are constantly under the pump becuase the oppo moves the ball the length of the ground with ease and lace out.

I’m sure he’s lovely.

As evidenced by his generous handball under no pressure directly to an opponent in his last game.

If you think a mistake on a football field is somehow a reflection of someone’s character then there’s probably no point arguing with you.

I reckon Kelly was an honest footballer who wanted to give his best.

Sometimes his work was solid, sometime very solid and other times he was poor.

Typically this occurred in the same match and the poor acts would take away from the good stuff he did. Frustratingly some of his poor stuff was because he let his emotions get the better of him and he was undisciplined, and this hurt the side.
But I appreciated the role he had to play and it’s a difficult role to negate opposition small forwards.

As for number of the games he was picked for and where he played, well that one is on the coaching staff. He was given a job and tried to carry it out.

I’m not fussed that he is leaving as I feel we need to turn the list over to improve the quality of the team if we are to be a genuinely competitive side.

So thanks, Jake Kelly.

How much did the club pay you to write that fluff piece?

I could write paragraph after paragraph on how poor our selection integrity has been and how much of a joke it was to play the likes of Kelly on the wing when we had players like Mass right there. I won’t get the 13 likes you got but the reality is we didn’t improve this year and missed out on the 8 again.

When Kelly played anywhere but as a lockdown defender he stank

As a pure lockdown defender he was good. Sadly Scott rarely played him in that role

In the end I don’t blame him, I place the blame on Scott for continuing to play him even though he was a detriment to the team

It is amazing that the same posters who have bagged Kelly, now applaud his effort.

Kelly has been a spud since he joined the Bombers. Has he ever got a vote in the BBlitz B&F, how many in the Crichton? What about Brownlow ?

Probably a nice bloke, in spite of his old man, but in three years he played far too many games in the firsts.

He finished 7th in the Essendon B&F in 2022.

He had a really good month or so that season too. Comprehensively beat Heeney, Charlie Cameron, and Rankine in successive weeks.

Imagine pointing to Blitz votes as evidence of anything. Pretty sure Leroy Jetta was top five in the voting one year.

Jetta had his good games.

IF only he became that 20 possession and a goal a game HFF/mid consistently

Time to give it a rest.

There’s been many times this year I didn’t want to play Redman. So I’m fine with that

Thankyou, chairman Mao.

Don’t reckon anyone has issues with his 2022 season and potentially not his 2023

He got waaaaay too much rope this year.

 I thought Kelly had left the building!!
