Former #29 - Jake Kelly

Kelly, goldy, lav, heppell, wright

He’s never dropping these guys. And you know it

He’s so awful with ball in hand.
Absolutely no idea what to do with the footy, and it’s still a problem in defence.
Obviously, it’s amplified when he’s further up the ground.

He should only be played when he has a specific match up.
Ie. Rankine, Papley (?).
Again, I just believe a ‘horses for courses’ approach to selection is appropriate for Kelly.

The smothered kick that led to the Fogarty goal late in the 1st was so deflating. The whole thing happened in slow motion, you could see it would be smothered before ball hit boot.

How can Brad literally be so dumb.

Wow

Outmarked by Fogarty then durdin.

The 2 biggest Pip squeaks in the afl.

But watch Brad promote this guy to midfield next week coz he will try to keep him in the team in every which way he can.

Someone get a CT scan of brad’s brain please, it might save our season

Goldy was great tonight and Heppell absolutely deserves his spot.
Both those names do not strengthen your argument as they are both deserving of selection.

I didnt say they should be dropped, i said scott would never drop them. Perhaps i should have added “no matter how bad they play”

I agree goldy was pretty good last night

Goldy was great until 3 qtr time. Then TDK ripped him to pieces.

What about when Kelly ran to the boundary line on his right side, but being the most one sided player around had to roll back onto his left into traffic coz he couldn’t use his right foot to kick it down the line. Players that one sided are a liability in the midfield.

I’m genuinely confused what this guy adds. This is his absolute peak with the age bracket he falls into, slowest thinking player on the list with limited footskills.

Move him on. Play Wanganeen or anyone really.

He gets judged harshly on here. He’s a very good stopper and an absolute workhorse who has been a solid contributor this season. But for the love of God stop kicking it to him when coming out of defence.

I never get why Kelly keeps getting a game … Surely out next week

It’s like he’s lining up for goal every time he takes a mark. It’s painful to watch.

If he’s not in specifically to shut down a small forward, he’s near on useless.

We need to stop using him as a main distributor out of the backline

He marks, stops, slows down then does a loopy slow 20m kick sideways.

He can’t have the ball in his hands at any stage of the game.

He ruins every single transitional phase, takes an eternity to move the ball, I’m not sure what he offers?

When you have Laverde and Heppell in the same team getting the ball defensive side of centre it’s heart attack central. You can’t trust any of them by foot. They kill momentum with the stop, prop, look sideways and backwards. Don’t ever play him on the wing. He only plays if he’s got a genuine match up he can lock down on and nullify otherwise it’s a wasted selection. And in that instance I’d rest/drop Heppell to balance out not having a 3rd liability with the footy in the team. Lav stays in because he is a key defender and until Reid is fit (if that ever occurs) he gets a game by default.

Disagree, reckon Hep has been very assured by foot. Unlike Lav, McKay and Kelly, he’s capable of keeping the ball in the corridor and moving the ball quickly.

Big disagree.

Heppel has been doing this as a job day in, day out, for a looooong time. He has no panic left in his game. Compare his possessions to that of Draper (for example of my point, not direct player comparison). Draper has zero chill. Blood rushes to the head and he makes errors or completely butchers a bounce before trying to chip it to himself with as much coordination as a giraffe with multiple sclerosis with a hangover wearing a fat suit while ripping too much ketamine. Hep, by contrast, is used to this ■■■■ by now.

He has been steady, unrushed and reliable coming out of defence this year.

I get he had a couple of average years but if you can’t see that he’s vastly improved this year with a consistent, injury free run, you’re living in the past.

Until we replace him and the other 2 with better options, we’re not going to get any better, especially when the heat goes up in finals.
Better teams will just play off them and mark our better users out of our backline, limiting our quick transition options.

Agree. Think people want him to fail. He could run at 95% efficiency and still get slammed. Will need his calm hand and leadership if we make finals.
