Jobe Watson and Virginia Slaghekke married at Maleny Manor on the Sunshine Coast
The Essendon Football Club champion has married his partner Virginia Slaghekke in a stunning celebration after their original plans were up-ended by Cyclone Alfred.
After a cyclone meant they had to postpone their planned wedding in Queensland in March, Essendon Football Club champion Jobe Watson has finally tied the knot with his partner Virginia Slaghekke.
The couple celebrated their union at Maleny Manor on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast this weekend with family, friends and some of Watson’s former teammates including Thomas Bellchambers and his wife Olympia Valance in attendance.
Their three children, Juniper, Wolf and Lilou, were part of the wedding ceremony.
Slaghekke posted a number of photos from the beautiful wedding celebration to social media on Sunday afternoon.
In an Instagram story Slaghekke showed a linen sign reading “Here’s to forever, Virginia & Jobe, 28 November 2025, Maleny Manor, QLD,” welcoming guests to the venue.
Sharing her excitement at the special weekend ahead, Slaghekke wrote on social media on Thursday, “Let’s go” alongside emojis of a bride and a wedding chapel.
Watson and Slaghekke had originally planned to wed on the Sunshine Coast earlier this year, but those plans were suddenly up-ended when Cyclone Alfred loomed dangerously over the Queensland coast.
The couple, who live in Melbourne, met in New York in 2016.
Watson, who had swapped Australia for the Big Apple after being caught up in the Essendon doping scandal, spotted Slaghekke, then a model studying neuroscience, in a coffee shop and ran down a street after her to give her his phone number on a napkin.
Two months later Slaghekke called “the cafe guy” and the rest is history.

Good on him. Love Jobe, he deserved so much more in his career. The last true Essendon champion that we’ve had.
It’s good that something great happened for Jobe as a consequence of the saga.

It’s so interesting the path life takes; had the supplement scandal not happened, Watson and his wife would never have met.
