This. He barely seemed VFL level in the reserves games I saw him play. This selection was a real head-scratcher, but I suppose we shouldn’t expect anything else these days.

We had a free punt on any kid in the country and we picked the mediocre small forward that we’ve already seen enough of for a few years prior. We’re playing one short with him in the team.

Matt said that in the player sponsor mid season draft meeting. I guess it doesn’t guarantee it but they saw a lot of upside in him as he gets better conditioning

Genuinely made me laugh
He kinda looks like a brad player to me, i could picture him watching the vfl game which he would every week coz it’s our side and saying to Rosa ‘gee this smart bloke looks alright’. He has the worst eye for talent of a coach I’ve seen. At least I hope that’s the case, otherwise I have concerns over Rosa’s judgement, which has otherwise been good.
I noticed McMahon got subbed out so as per brad philosophy he will likely get chopped this week and therefore likely delisted too. Unless he had an injury of course.

If it was a decision to encourage players to join our VFL as we might give them a shot, I can get behind that.

It was definitely a strange selection. Addressed absolutely none of our gaps from injuries, wasn’t showing huge form in the VFL, has never really shown the potential to make it at the top level.
I wish him well, hopefully he sticks with the VFL team because he is a solid contributor and leader from what I’ve seen.

This is a really good point. Might attract more vfl talent. I like that. Just a shame that Oskar didn’t do anything in the end. Seems like a good kid, just not AFL quality

I thought for some reason Smartt was on an 18 month contract. Or am I wrong?
You might have him mixed up with May. Pies advised him to nominate an 18 month contract to try and shoo away any oppo interest

I dont really have an issue with selecting him, was very surprised he got picked as hadn’t shown enough for mine, but i think you can take hail mary swings from the msd/psd/ssp, if it works youre laughing, if not, its only 6 months see you alter.
