#49 Matt Dea

absolutely. and its only a about a years difference between the two of them

Very unlucky. You feel like if he was an outside midfielder or a small forward heā€™d have a place on the list, but if there isnā€™t room for Goddard, there isnā€™t room for Dea

I was pretty surprised and disappointed with this. I really like Matty Dea. He may not be best 22, but you need a really solid best 30 to succeed. He could fill multiple roles in the back line and was one of the very few ā€˜true defendersā€™ we have.

If injuries strike down back this year we will regret this decision. Would have been far more likely to have an impact to our success in 2019 than Long or McNiece.

Also seems to be very popular with playing group - you donā€™t get elected most courageous player without having an impact on the guys around you to inspire them to stand a little taller and go in a little harder.

We were only ever going to keep one of Dea and Ambrose. We kept Ambrosde.

Heā€™s better than McNeice and Long (combined).

Club must have itā€™s reasons, certainly wonā€™t be salary cap.

is Ambrosde playing in the twos with McNernan?

We only need to carry one mid sized lock down defender. And as you pointed out, whoever that is will probably spend most of his time in the magoos anyway. Probably with Stewart and Brown unless the pecking order changes.

McNiece and Long cost nothingā€¦1 rookie spot. Dea had to go to give us room for draft picks. Hopefully gets another gigā€¦solid HBF defender with 5 years left. PIES could do with a bloke like him

Iā€™m not sure why itā€™s so perplexing for people

Part of list management involves providing depth to areas of need.

Next in line small defender - McNeice
Next in line outside mid/hFF - Long

Dea firstly was only playing due to Gleeson being out, then at times was able to play 3rd tall defender but was over taken by Francis.

And next in line realistically for us for what Dea brings to side will be Ridley who is quicker, taller and a much better kick. And Guelfi also showed great versatility covering both Ambrose & Saad in defence when they were injured in game.

Dea did a job for us as we needed in past few years but isnā€™t needed anymore. Not in our best team and we have quality young players who need to get the opportunities now depth wise.

Reckon dea is a better small defender than McNeice

List management donā€™t

Nor has he actually been picked to play on small fwds when in our side

McNeice is a Cat B rookie while Dea is a primary listed player. Not an apples to apples comparison in terms of list makeup.

I liked Dea. Very honest and solid in the air. If Gleeson returns, Francis continues, Ridley develops, and then thereā€™s Ambrose and maybe Rodman depending on where he plays, then Iā€™m not sure heā€™d have been needed much. AFL quality for a team that needs a good citizen. Suns?

No more Jerrett or Colyer

Heā€™s it. Hence Dodoro said expect to see him play in senior side more often next year.

Thanks for your service.
The club has made the right decision.

I remember one of the last days of school in Year 12 and Matt had just returned from the U18s State Combine. When I asked him about it, Matt said he was extremely humbled to be invited and was incredibly lucky to even be considered. Matt was the nicest bloke in the schoolyard and never dared boast of his accolades. He never spoke ill of those below him.

Brisbane, Adelaide and Richmond were interested and his name was called up at a pick in the 40s. Matt was an exceptional junior basketballer who came to footy a bit later and for that, he may have been behind a lot of others in his draft class on pure talent.

Matt never dropped his head even when he was beaten by those with more natural talent. He was willing to put his body on the line whenever it mattered, time and time again.

To Matty, thank you so much for putting your hand up to help your boyhood club in our time of need.
