Former #9 Dylan Shiel - from July 2022

Shiel is just like Stringer, helps us avoid the good part of the draft.

Rather lose with Hobbs and Tsatas inside more than win with Shiel.

I understand this is an unpopular opinion.

We have Melbournes first and ours will probably still be inside the top 10 by seasons end

Has a year to run on his contract you need guys like Shiel when you are a young side

I don’t think that’s unpopular tbh

I feel the same way

It’s the only rational opinion

Yeah … pretty good last night.

Plus I really enjoy watching him. Bit of excitement. Makes things happen…

But still don’t get why he’s in the team.

Just feel coach is being a bit of resultist by playing him. Are we developing players or going for sugar hits. Actions not words coach. Action the playing of the youngsters…

I haven’t seen Shiel look as happy as he did singing the song last night. I think he was pretty happy with his game.

It’s not unreasonable that he would be playing seniors and midfield when we have Caldwell, Parish & Tsatas all unavailable.

I understand the ā€˜sugar hit’ viewpoint though.
It certainly looked like our opposition had particular problems in shutting down the run of Shiel and Durham last night.

Having some senior players in the side to help out the youngsters is called ā€˜sugar hit’

That’s the argument being made above by other posters.

He is in pretty good condition. I reckon he could actually play some decent footy beyond this year.

Just hope it’s not with us.

Last night was one of his better games for the club. I still dont think he should be getting more midfield time than Hobbs or Tsatas. You can argue all you want but look at what good clubs like Sydney do with older midfielders who are still good enough but have no point in being in the team because they are keeping out first round draft picks.

Luke Parker is a perfect example of this.
Shiel is 32, he will 100% beyond any reason of a doubt not be here for our next finals run, and he is not a leader.

He went to 15 bounces last night and Hobbs went to 5, Hobbs was limited to 60% time on ground because of this.

I dont know in what world this is going to do us good in the long run.

Herald Sun reporting that he’s keen to stay on with us:

Hmmm. I’d had him gone for all money at the end of 2023 and 2024, so it’s a fair 180. Depending on the contract terms, I’m not against it. We do need some senior experience and a real professional to help guide the young kids. Seems as if he’s got a good perspective on where he’s at.

They covered it on the midweek tackle too - said he’s desperate to stay.

I reckon the younger crew will be rapt to have Dyl around.

I found it pretty poignant that he was the one that announced Archie’s rising star nomination. Something of a leader without having an official leadership title.

Up to Harley Reid, whether he likes Dylan or not.

The year is 2028 and the starting midfield is Todd Goldstein (snr), Dylan Shiel, Will Setterfield and Liams Shiels (probably).

It is 2025, not 2005.

TOG, for all 22 players is relative to their level of fitness, not their importance to the side.

You can argue all you like about CBAs, and that would be quite a reasonable argument.
But TOG is conditioning based. I mean it’s only been that was for 15 years.

I mentioned in the game day thread that being at the game live it was noticeable how much he was directing traffic off the ball and chatting/instructing the younger mids. Saw him talking to Hobbs a couple of times in regards to positioning it seemed and when Caddy had that shot to seal the game, Dylan sprinted from the middle of the ground and initially I thought he was looking for the cheap handball out the back but he beelined straight to him and appeared to tell him to settle and take the shot.
