Forward line

Senior list is settled.  We have lost Crameri, Davey & Gumby from the forward line.  And also NatRat, Hille and Davis.

Incoming: Chapman, Dalgleish, Edwards, Aylett, Z. Merrett & Fantasia.

And Bomber prefers Hurley back.

So what will our fwd line look like?

Winders / Chappy if fit.

Kommer.

Resting ruck.

And then what?????

Who are our tall fwds??

They are going to need to get a lot of games and goals out of Daniher. In Nick Riewoldt's first season he played 6 games, averaging 4 marks per game. In the following season he played 22, averaging 8 marks per game. Hopefully Daniher can have a breakout season in his second year like Riewoldt did.

Ah yes, brain-fade - how could I forget Daniher?

Looking lean though ain't it?

Reliant on a kid & no depth.

It makes the preseason interesting to see who starts up there.

HF Zaharakis Ryder WInderlich

F Chapman Daniher Merrett

you would assume resting ruck and Daniher as key talls. - Bellcho would be close to goal and allowing daniher to play CHF. and I would assume Ryder would be CHF/FF while he is resting forward.

Also I believe one of Hurley or Carlisle would start forward if there is no defensive matchups

This gives us good flexibility, as i belive we had too many key position players last year which affected our run and fadeouts...
Zaka/winders/chapman can all be switched onto the ball and not specialist forwards, allowing greater onfield rotations.

whereas Jetta/Davey arent big enough to impact when they are in the midfield.

I think one of Carlisle and Hurley would need to play forward with JD and at times a resting ruckman.
Winderlich and Chapman as permanant smalls with midfielders rotating through.
Would like to see Watson and Goddard spend a bit of time forward. Both are dangerous going forward and hard to match up.

Hardingham might be an interesting player down there. He is a good mark, a bit unpredictable but an ordinary kick for goal.

However, players can improve their kicking for goal through dedicated hard work over a period of time.

With a more settled backline, I’d love to see hardy tried (and persevered with) forward.

resting rucks are pretty good. I almost prefer Belly playing 80% up forward with Ryder carrying the full time ruck duties. What I don’t want is the opposition putting there best defender on Daniher.

Bellchambers (or Ryder) as the resting ruck.

Hurley as the tall forward. Daniher is depth, but should get ten to fifteen games.

Chapman as the medium forward. Jackson Merrett and O’Brien are depth.

Winderlich is the small forward. Colyer and Jetta are depth.

Kommer is the defensive forward.

That leaves a spare spot for a rotating forward / midfielder. This should be raffled between Jobe, Myers, Goddard, Zaharakis and Melksham.

I’d love to hope that Daniher gets a full season of games, but history shows there are very few tall forwards who get through a full season of footy in their second year while playing for a team that is in with a good chance of making the finals.

Daniher needs to muscle up big time over the break so he doesn't get pushed off the ball so easily.  He's the man.  Resting ruckman is the other key big, then our other goals need to come from smalls and mids

i reckon we have a 190 cm 93Kg mature age ready made forward.

Great kick, Great mark overhead and great awareness.

Brendan Goddard.

With all our talent coming through the middle and plenty of depth down back I can't see BJ having a permanent spot down forward.

Would be a perfect mix with JD and Chappy.

Thoughts?

I can see Goddard playing forward some of the time in 2014 and he does have great hands and a dead eye for goal. But I still think he is so valuable at distributing by foot over long distances and linking up play in midfield\\hb so I would not like to see this as a permanent measure until perhaps later in his career. For mine, I would like to see Carlisle paired with Daniher forward if Hurley goes back to defence.

If BJ or Jobe played a full season forward, how many goals do you think they would kick?

HOW MANY GOALS BJ AND JOBE KICK?

Jobe would kick 30-40 goals easily imo

Goddard probably about the same.

Personally I was a little disappointed that we used him so much behind the ball last season. I was critical of the Saints when they did the same. While I can't see him being a pernament forward, I would like to see him start across half-forward more often. Our kicking into the forward line was dire at times last year. If he played more forward of the ball he would address that, as well as creating a nightmare matchup with his marking.

Where’s all the panic merchants that were saying our forward line was screwed without Gumb, crammers and froggy ?

Looks like plenty of options to me.

Rattling off a list of midfielders and half backs who could 'have a go' up forward, is hardly putting said panic merchants back in their boxes though, is it?
Our forward line still may be quite screwed.

Yep, it's gonna take a bit more than 'hardy can't kick, but he might learn,' and 'I've always thought Goddard would make a great forward,' to convince me we have a forward line capable of challenging for a flag.
If that's panicking... Then merchant me up
