Free Kick Count Ladder since 2001

Not that i always like to blame the umpires, but we do seem to cop a raw deal from them more so then any other.
So out of interest, I just went through and recorded the ladder position of every club based on the total “free kick for” count in each year since 2001 - 2015. I left out GWS and Gold Coast since they haven’t been around for the whole duration, so its based on all 16 clubs.

Now, i’ve had a strong gut feeling about what’s been going on, but the results were astonishing! and at the extreme end of what i suspected.
I suspected my beloved club we would be near the bottom, and that my other most despised club, the Weagles, would be near the top, since they always seem to be looked after by some higher, utterly biased source i cannot see, but WOW!!! have a look at the results…

Please remember i set up the afl.com.au stat page from using the advanced options button, and leaving just the frees for stats to show up, then pressed the total button to reflect the most frees for awarded from 1 on the ladder, to the least awarded, then recorded each teams positions on the ladder, and going through year after year from 2001-2015. My ladder adds up those positions i recorded and thus, the overall ladder is shown.(e.g… If a team was lucky enough to be awarded the most frees year after year for these 15 years, and came 1st on each years ladder as a result, this teams total score for the mother ladder would be 15.
So in this case “the Mother Ladder”, less is more)

The 2001 - 2015 Mother Ladder. The number next to each team is the ladder position total from 2001 -2015 for winning free kicks Proof, the AFL Footy God wears a Weagle Jumper, and Essendon is seen as the Dark force that must be stopped…this is the only way it makes any sense.

1. Weagles - 77 (Came 1st three times, and was in the top 10 every year but one)
2. Geelong - 90
3. Port Adelaide - 90
4. Hawthorn - 104
5. Sydney - 110
6. Carlton - 124
7. Collingwood - 130
8. North Melbourne - 130
9. St Kilda - 131
10. Fremantle - 136
11. Richmond - 138
12. Adelaide - 153
13. Western Bulldogs - 162
14. Brisbane - 162
15. Melbourne - 166
16. Essendon - 169

So correct me if I am wrong but what you are saying is that the ladder position total and free kicks against are highly correlated over the last 15ish years.

That being the West Coast Eagles have the most free kicks for and the lowest ladder position on average over the period.

Conversely Essendon have the least free kicks and the worst ladder position over the period.

If this is correct then it also reflects that the overall ladder position and free kicks for are exactly the same for the whole list.

You should throw GCS and GWS in with an asterix to see if they fit the stats.

If the five minutes of the WC v North game I have just watched is any indication, everyone gets fuct over in WA. Throwing the thing till the early morn in the forward line. Wonder why they struggle to win away from home.

incoming!

Free kicks against? What are the fors?

Hmmm, so it wasn’t just me then…

nice work benzina.

Free kicks against? What are the fors?
They are for the fors.

We really need to work on this aspect because it is really obvious that other teams do. 50m penalties being given away is another area I suspect we unfortunately excel in.

The Eagles would be thanking the Perth crowd for a lot of those frees for and (lack of) against.

Free kicks against? What are the fors?
They are for the fors. It works out the same result when totalling the against.

You are going to have to help because I am confused. If this is a “for” list then why do the Eagles have less than us? And the against would be different in numbers wise so would be interesting to see. What I mean by that, it would be interesting to see what our for and against difference is like compared to Collingwood or Eagles.

Maths isn’t my strongest point so deeper explanation for idiots like me is appreciated.

A number with a + or - prefix would have also made more sense

It may be the year end net position.

Not that i always like to blame the Umps, but we do seem to always be on the wrong end of the stick. So out of interest, I just went through and recorded the ladder position of every club based on the total free kick count for each year since 2001 - 2015. I left out GWS and Gold Coast since they haven't been around for the whole duration,

So did you exclude all free kicks against those two teams?

Actually what would be really useful is a ratio of free kicks for and against. For example, using your ladder the Eagles might have a ratio of 1.4 free kicks received against every one given. We might have a ratio of .78.

i don’t understand anything about this ladder, what its actually showing or how it was compiled

but i DO know that AT will be utterly triumphant that his conspiracy theory that the AFL ‘maggots’ are out to get us appears to be proven.

I think what benzina is doing is assuming West Coast finished most frees for in 2001, 5th most frees in 2002, 2nd most frees in 2003…etc

WC would be 1+5+2 = 8 points

Thats my guess.

If we are the worst, it would give life the phrase “just because youre paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.”

How many frees in the droopy sash vs straight?

wat

joe gave away 41 frees this year.

how many frees against us since Hird tried to stand up for the club back in 2013? Its not only the ones we don’t its the ones we get when we are in control of the ball anyway just to even up the count. Then there are the ones the opp gets just when it looks like we are gaining momentum and getting on top. The opp seems to get some ■■■■ week free’s which totally swings the game.

Has happens far to much to be coincidence for mine. I used to think I was just been silly thinking this way. But now I am not so sure, there is nothing that the scum at AFL house could do that could surprise me anymore…
