Absolute guess but what other early time keepers are there…
Hourglass would be a long time earlier…as would sundial.

Prunus would be the national tree.
I think the flower is an Asteraceae.
I’ve done a bit more reading into Japans national flower.
Western countries say it’s more the cherry blossom (sakura) but japanese websites and gov.jp says it’s something else. It also doubles as the flower of the imperial family.

My missus who gave me Cheery Blossoms believes the alternative could be Sakura
