Is it the crime or the coverage that is the problem?
Objectively people in the UK feel safer than ever personally, but are convinced that there is crime elsewhere that is out of control. That tells me that people’s experience doesn’t match the coverage, but people are still convinced it’s happening somewhere.

It certainly became more of an “issue” when Sadiq Khan (Labour) became mayor of London in 2016. Reporting was a bit more subdued when it was Boris.
I suspect the “faith in police” numbers have been affected by the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a policeman.
