The real phenomenon is the standing accorded by governments of all persuasions to religious bodies to flout the law on child abuse. Whenever religious bodies claim discrimination or seek more laws discriminating in their favour, they need to be reminded of this.

Christians dominate our politics, with many ardent RCs on both sides of the House.
Whenever an internal Party discussion on priests buggering kids is argued, they all go very quiet, which to me is a massive black mark on all of them. No doubt that traditionally the RCC in Australia has massive political clout and uses it. It has waned but Parliamentary Parties still fear them and bend over like choir boys.
And reality is that it is relatively recent that Church got so much control. Labor had rid itself of RCC strings after the split and the DLP formed, but Gough saw an opportunity in 1969 and made it policy to funds their schools for the Catholic vote and it has gotten out of hand ever since.

I think everyone knew, people are just happy it’s out in the open now.
I’m waiting for public apologies, or even acknowledgements they were wrong, from Chris Kenny, Miranda Divine, Andrew Bolt et al.
They have all, at various times, called this a witch hunt and protested Pell’s innocence.
Also, it’s incredibly sad that Anthony Foster isn’t alive to see this day. This would not have happened without him.

Nature of the charges is way way worse than what the public would have generally thought. “Child sexual abuse” as a term doesn’t even convey the seriousness.
Better to call it rape (which is what his lawyer described it as). Rape. He raped a fkn alterboy after mass, in St Pats, WHILE he was the person in charge of the church’s response to these issues.
