Grand Final Long Weekend

So Premier-elect, Dan the man has declared that the Friday before Grand Final be a day that families spend together.

Premier confirms Grand Final long weekend

VICTORIANS will have a public holiday for next year‘s Grand Final parade.

Premier-elect Daniel Andrews has confirmed the state will have a long weekend for the Grand Final, beginning with a public holiday on Friday October 2.

"It'll be one of the best grand final parades ever," Mr Andrews declared on radio station 3AW on Tuesday night.

"I think it'll be a fantastic opportunity for families to spend time together and to share in what‘s an iconic event," he said

"I think that it's just about recognising that families work hard, a lot of people are under a lot of pressure, and it's just the right thing to do."

Mr Andrews has been pushing to introduce the day off since way back in 2011, when, as Labor opposition leader, he called on then Liberal premier Ted Baillieu to introduce what he dubbed 'Grand Final Friday'.

Over the several years since it was first proposed, the plan has been met with varied reactions.

Some critics are concerned Melbourne's CBD won't be as busy without office workers out and about on their lunch breaks, while retailers and restaurant-owners are worried about the cost of paying penalty rates for staff.

Why is this on the Non-Essendon board?

Um, so we should move it to the DFH?

#17 coming right up

Dan is right, all Essendon people should be available for our Grand Final Parade.

What a stupid policy, decision and waste of a public holiday. How long till the next election? “It’s just the right thing to do”??? Seriously, what an idiot!

Even SEN hosts and people calling in said it was stupid and other dates could’ve been selected. Like melbourne cup Monday for instance.

Melbourne had the Show Day holiday for many years on the Thursday before GF.

Monday after grand final weekend might be better for some

Vic doesn’t have a public holiday between June and November.

Always a massive grind.

I’ll take it.

Yes the Monday before Melbourne Cup would've been great, but only people in the metro area get Melbourne Cup day off, the rest of Victoria is business as usual.

It was changed by Mr Kennet.

Don't know re this public holiday whether just for metro or for all, can't see the reasoning at the moment but I suppose it's an idea put forward it this stage.

A lot of people think we get an extra public holiday now...... No we don't. There's no Anzac Day public holiday.

Is this because it falls on a weekend or a permanent change?

Stupid yes. But in retrospect we get a holiday for a f--king pointless horse race. Would have to be the stupidest state on earth imo.

i think it's a great idea

just saying get heaps at the start of the year and hardly any for a while afterwards, spread it out brah

it's ******* stupid. You get 100,000 a year there regardless of who is in it because those who work in the city will head there on their lunch break plus it is school holidays for children, so the cafes/retail stores would be full thus filling the economy.

Now with the PH, the cafe stores will either have to pay DT (or triple, depending on award) or they will close for the day. And now turning it into a long weekend some will just skip the parade can just go away for the 3 days.

I think only Metropolitan Melbourne get it now.

Your thinking is correct.

I’ll take any day off I can get, I’m not fussy.

Why is this on the Non-Essendon board?

Because of the weekend. But the October long weekend is only locked in for the next two years.

Yep - pretty much this.

WE NEEED IT! Brings us level with Tassie and ACT for most public holidays!

Although it’s kinda bitter sweet for me, cause I like to get out of melbourne for long weekends and go camping/cycling/festivals, but this means missing the grand final…

No it doesn't. We are not getting an extra public holiday. Don't be fooled by the political hype.

We are getting the same amount of public holidays next year as what we had this year and last year. The only difference is we don’t get a public holiday for Anzac Day (as it’s a Saturday), we get one in October instead.

What about the following year? Anzac Day on a Monday…
