Lol this isn’t exclusive knowledge. MCG is more popular than Marvel.
I don’t mind Marvel but like you I prefer the ‘G’. When you start the walk from Richmond Station to the ‘G’ you know you are that you are up for a game of footy. I still get goosebumps on Anzac Day with the expectation of a huge crowd.
Marvel can never replicate that feeling.
Can’t see us ever moving back to the MCG though. From a scheduling perspective we will be fighting for the limelight against Collingwood and Richmond who are now bigger clubs than us, and are more likely to get the better time slots. Marvel we have no competition and it’s far easier to turn a dollar.
If the redevelopment of Docklands gets approved then construction will commence in 2021 with likely completion approximately 2023. That will coincide with us renegotiating our new tenancy agreement with the AFL. They will throw a tonne of money at us to stay and we will sign a new long term agreement. We are all about commercial viability unfortunately.
I also like Marvel, easy to get in and out, I don’t really care where we play just play good.
You mention that when you undertake the walk from Richmond Station to the G’, you know you’re doing so to watch a game of footy. I think that’s an important point of difference to touch on. When you attend a match the MCG, football is the sole focus.
When you watch on at Marvel Stadium, you’re bombarded with hollow corporate messaging and distracting marketing activations designed to draw your attention away from the actual game.
I’m not saying everyone has to agree with this assessment. It’s merely my personal experience (and perception).
Now our home ground is the reason why we aren’t good at football?
No, but it’s the reason why we’ve stagnated our growth as a football club.
Richmond & Collingwood struggle to get their members to even show up to Docklands stadium.
They can’t stand the lack of atmosphere.
IMO the atmosphere is very manufactured. The amount of Sunday 1pm games we’ve played at Docklands, and you could hear a pin drop.
We seem to be a turning profit more often than not, we’ve had membership growth, I expect that to dip a little though.
On field performance needs to improve, where we play has little to do with that IMO.
BS, Go re watch some of our good wins there over the last few years. Tippa vs North in particular, the teams performance dictate how good the atmosphere is.
Gimme 35-40k at Marval over 35-40k at the G.
The MCG over 65k is unrivalled though I agree.
I agree with your last two words.
Are you going to ban me again for wrong-think mate?
You’re wrong
but it’s not objectionable.
On the commercial side of things they’re equally bad.
That’s good to hear.
I do disagree based on my personal experience attending both venues regularly as a reserved seat member, but each to their own.
What we need is some nutcase billionare to build us our own stadium at Essendon Airport or somewhere. Then I’ll be truly happy.
PLITTZ ON THE MARCH
IMO, Interstate clubs have a better chance of beating us at Marvel in the climate controlled windless stadium, then they do in the wind, rain & elements of a game at the G - they all come from warmer climes.
Only way to work it out would be to do a 10 year comparison from the 90’s (W/L ratio overall v Vic teams v Interstate teams) compared to a 20 year comparison (2000-2019) for the same ratios. Maybe that @Lindsay bloke might be keen to check the records, I’d have no idea how to do it easily.
Yet Collingwood, Richmond and Hawthorn do the same.
Richmond passed us as a football club while they were losing elimination finals back in 2013-2015 even though we were widely considered more successful than them.
There’s a reason why the big and successful clubs play at the MCG and the smaller, irrelevant clubs play at Marvel.
Fitting Carlton and us became irrelevant over the last 20 years.
Richmond were putting up 15-7 seasons while we scraped to 11-11/12-10, They’ve rocketed past us because they’re the best team in the comp.
On field performance dictates how fast you can grow as a club.
An EF loss is still an EF final loss. They also had the 16 year finals drought so they actually weren’t more successful.
Even if we become successful, Marvel will continue to stagnate our growth. We won’t be posting Richmond-like attendances and memberships because there’ll always be a cap to our growth.
I don’t think it’s stunting our growth now but agree it could if we become successful, I also think the fact that the AFL own Marvel now means that contract is extremely flexible.
