I agree with those who thinks these strange occurrences weren't so much about favouring Hawthorn or looking after GC, but were more about preventing further outcry if we were seen to benefit "even more" from finishing last.
Just imagine if we were able to trade pick 1 for 2 first rounders, like Brisbane traded pick 2 for pick 3 and 16, or Fremantle traded pick 3 for McCarthy pick 7 and 34.
On top of that imagine if we got JOM for free because we had pick 1 in the PSD.
We were well placed for these sorts of things to happen, but they didn't.
These outcomes could have meant we could have got 3 or 4 gun players for finishing last and before we used our own two 2nd round picks, let alone 3rd. This would have completely wiped out our draft sanctions and on top of this we have blooded some serious young talent this year and the sides morale seems higher than anyone could have hoped.
I genuinely think that the AFL couldn't have born the outcry if we got a draft bonanza for finishing last.
It was more than enough for them that they had to defend our pick 1.
