The Bombers will have two new faces join the playing group for their 2019 pre-season campaign.
Tom Hird and Mason Fletcher will commence training on Tuesday morning in line with the AFLās father-son guidelines.
Tom is the son of past champion player, captain and coach James Hird (253 games), while Mason is the son of Essendon great Dustin Fletcher (400 games).
The pair is eligible for selection by the Bombers at the 2019 national draft, and has been granted permission to train with the squad by the AFL.
Though Mason was eligible for selection in 2018, the 18-year-old opted not to nominate for the national draft after a season-ending back injury, with his priority to consolidate his game via another year in the TAC Cup.
Good call. Upon reflection, with pair it does get murky.
Maybe itās just me, but if I am isolating from the pair (one of the pair is eligible for selection), I use it as singular. If itās a collective term (the pair are eligible for selection), I use it as plural.
Hmm, I donāt know. I mean, sure with a pair of pants, there is one pants(?-for a lack of a better term), so definitely singular. But with a pair of people, there are two individuals making the whole. Hence, for me conceptually, I am talking about a collective and itās a plural.
A quick google found that this has been debated for a long time, with no consensus other than both are fine. So, I do accept my initial post was wrong, and in fact the writer has correct grammar.
