James Hird — January 2017 onwards

Fremantle not the only AFL club chasing James Hird
SAM EDMUND, Herald Sun

AT LEAST two AFL clubs are chasing James Hird as the exiled great weighs up a return to the game.

It has emerged Fremantle is not the first club to approach the former Essendon coach, who parted ways with the Bombers in 2015 in the wake of the supplements saga that saw him banned for a year.

“One other club, a senior coach, has expressed interest in hiring him,” AFL Coaches Association chief Mark Brayshaw told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“Fremantle aren’t the first and I don’t believe they will be the last.”

Hird, 45, is overseas and yet to announce his intentions, but Brayshaw said: “I would imagine it would be something he’s very excited about.

“It’s a ■■■■■■ good story.”

Speaking as a father, Brayshaw said he would relish Hird’s appointment at the Dockers, where his son Andrew is in his first season.

Brayshaw has two other sons, Angus (Melbourne) and Hamish (West Coast), also in the AFL.

“If it ends up that he helps my young bloke at Freo in one way or another, that would be wonderful,” he said.

The AFL has confirmed there was nothing to stop Hird accepting an official position at any club.

The Dockers contacted Hird about filling a Melbourne-based, part-time role as an opposition analyst.

An AFL source said there was “enormous goodwill” among the coaching fraternity for Hird, 14 months after a drug overdose resulted in him receiving care at a specialist mental health centre.

He waged a three-year fight to clear his name before buying into the chocolate industry.

Former Essendon assistant Robert Shaw said the timing was right for Hird to return to the game he loved.

“What a wonderful opportunity, to work not only with Ross (Lyon), but to be based in Melbourne, be part-time and to dip your toe back in the water,” Shaw said.

“I think it’s a sensational job for him. I hope Ross gives it to him and I so hope he takes it.”

Shaw also tweeted his support for Hird, adding that while the Bombers great wasn’t blameless, he was also let down.

“Super player — maybe a great coach. At that time, poor as leader/decision maker. I was angry that the club was harmed,” Shaw wrote.

“His mentors: weak and gutless. He paid a huge price. He will lift and rebuild. Not at EFC (Essendon Football Club). Return in time. Enough is enough.”

Hird’s premiership teammate Joe Misiti replied: “Well said Robert.”

Danny Corcoran, the football operations manager at Essendon while Hird was coach, said Hird would be a great acquisition.

AFL Hall of Fame legend Leigh Matthews also passed comment on the Essendon premiership player’s possible return to coaching ranks.

“James Hird as a part time opposition analyst, talk about over qualified, sounds a bit like Albert Einstein running errands for the science department,” Matthews tweeted.

Dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd said Hird would be a “huge asset for any footy club”.

“He certainly took some missteps for which he paid an enormous price, but I think most people can forgive that and realise that he’s moved on,” Judd told Perth radio. “I suspect it’s only a matter of time before we do see a little bit more of him, either at clubland or back in the media.”

It’s nice for James. If he goes to another team they will instantly be my 2nd favourite.

It’s also probably what the AFL always wanted too - file a bunch of “fluff” redemption articles, get him back involved as though nothing ever happened but still make it looked like he was punished and had something to say sorry for…

Good to see some positivity about him returning (possibly) to football.
Hope one day he will return to Essendon in some capacity for another premiership.

Time flies. Remember how uber controversial it was to hand out the Norm Smith?

This has the AFLs grubby hands all over it. Where were these people when Hird was hung out to dry? Nowhere in fact many of them stuck the boots in. Bunch of sanctimonious cretins.

Honestly F$#K the AFL Hirdy you are too good for them.

Oh, and Einstein had morals, so not really like that at all imo.

It’s not healthy for anyone to read that filth, Deckham.

Spoilered.

What an AFL beat-up. Lucas and Matthews have put it in perspective about a relatively minor part time job, the rest of those so-called commentators are acting as AFL stooges. Have they no shame?
Has this AFL redemption exercise got anything to do with rumours of Fahour’s return to AFL House?

Umm, NO!

I think there are very many arseholes who can be blamed for this.

Starting with Vlad, then permeating all through the AFL hierarchy including the present guilty incumbents including Gil “Leave out the bits we don’t need” Mclachlan and not forgetting those who have been moved on e.g. Mike “Your mate will never work in football again” Fitzpatrick.

Then everyone involved in ASADA, WADA, CAS etc Surely we remember their crimes.

Not forgetting the Federal Government from the “Blackest Day” farce and subsequent cover-ups.

Also not forgetting J Mudd who had the opportunity to do the right thing but fell in love with Amnesia Andruska instead.

Then the review court who held up his decision. My good and learned friend, a retired judge, said the case should have been referred to the court that judges judges (he actually said the right name but I don’t recall it ATM) because J Mudd behaved so oddly.

What about the Senate that thought it was perfectly acceptable for a paid public servant to tell them lies, then gave him carte blanche to get away with it?

What about fat Eddie who conspired to perpetrate the worst act of propaganda and media espionage in the modern era?

What about all the AFL Presidents, not least those of Port Adelaide, Geelong, Footscray, and the aforementioned Collingwood, who came to the fire to pour petrol with glee?

What about Clarko, mentioned above, who did not hesitate sinking the boot in when it mattered?

What about the ENTIRE FARKING MEDIA INDUSTRY from the bottom dwellers right up to Four Corners that fell in lock-step with all the above and did not bother to investigate the truth?

On balance, I suspect we do not “only have ourselves to blame”.

Rubbish. The club would have written a catchy hashtag like #comebackstory and we’d recruit 2 or 3 names and everything would have been fine.

When is the EFC going to apologise to James Hird and not the other way around as some in footy world seem to see it.

I hope James goes to another club and has the success that he didn’t AND COULDN’T achieve at the EFC.

As Gillon said, “we are a very forgiving at family at the AFL.” Pass the bucket please.

Yes that’s all true. But that’s why it’s so wrong. Manipulation by media. Same old, same old.

Same.

I do feel he likely going to have to go and be an assistant elsewhere or in a perfect world under Woosh perhaps as a transition back into the top job.

Would be the greatest thing ever for him to get another go at it, with all the mistakes and learnings out the way and becomes a successful coach.

Everyone external to EFC family would be losing the plot over it but we’d all love it.

Won’t ever happen while Gil is still at the top however.
