James Hird — January 2017 onwards

We've made it all the way to Port Douglas... 4000 odd k's. Having dinner at a pub, and I see this hanging on the wall

You know Leon Baker still lives in PD

He is an absolute disgrace

Hird is suffering from a mental illness and is so severely unwell he tried to end his life. The idea that he is there of his own doing is despicable and represents everything that is wrong with the stigma associated with these sorts of diseases.

Organisations like Beyond Blue should be coming down on him like the proverbial ton of bricks, he just contributed to the stigma they are trying to fight.

People with a mental illness don’t “drive themselves to the ICU” anymore than kids with cancer, or people with diabetes or any other disease.

With all due respect, is that statement fact?

It’s been well documented that Hird was taken to hospital via ambulance after a suspected overdose and is now currently being treated in an "intensive care unit’ in a specialist mental health facility.

I think it’s pretty likely that the statement is correct, even if the deliberate self-harm is only suspected he is clearly unwell

Qualifiers aside I think my point is still valid

Tragic moment cynically seized on by…
Patrick Smith.

Given what's being said by those close to him and the fact he's in a facility, it's clear Hird either accidentally or deliberately attempted to take his life. Had he been thinking about doing this for a while or was it a spur of the moment thing? Doesn't really matter. Thankfully, he's still wth us and on the long road back to recovery.

I had just written a long post about mental illness and suicide, from my experience as a social worker.
I decided to delete it. I’m not sure it’s the right place to be going into depth about the issue in an online forum with hundreds/thousands of readers, many who are anonymous. And I’m sure there are readers in this forum who are currently contemplating suicide.

I’m not sure anyone has posted It in this forum, but…

Patrick Smith defends controversial column on James Hird

Date
January 18, 2017 - 11:42AM

Sports columnist Patrick Smith has defended a controversial piece he wrote about James Hird following his well-publicised health scare.

The Australian’s chief sports writer has come under fierce criticism over the column, which some said was unnecessary, given Hird’s state.

The situation reached tipping point when Hird’s father Allan, who spoke with 3AW Mornings last week, wrote a letter to The Herald Sun to voice his disgust with Smith.

But Smith told 3AW Mornings the article needed to be written, given much of the wider commentary that followed Hird’s hospitalisation.

“I’m very aware of James’ position, but I’m also very aware that a week after James became ill and was taken to hospital that history was being re-written daily in the newspapers and on the internet,” Smith said.

“I just felt it was essential that we actually go back and remember what actually happened at Essendon.”

He rejected suggestions he was “kicking” Hird while he was down.

“I’m not kicking James while he’s down – I’m very concerned about James Hird,” Patrick Smith said.

“If telling the truth is considered unfair, then we’re in a horrible position in our community.”

There are so many smugly ironic statements in this I don’t know where to start.

So… Truth. That’s what he’s on about? Really? That’s why society is in a terrible way? Makes sense. Fking pillock.

What a vile piece of sewage…

I hope Hirdy is recovering and when he does he is well enough to find a job and re-enter society.

I’m not sure if that’s what has caused him to so much grief. It would be for me.

When he is well the best thing for him to do IMO is go and be an assistant somewhere other than the dons.

A man needs work and a purpose. And when that’s taken away from you it’s ■■■■■■ tough.

The best thing for him to do would be to leave Australia and put this bullshit and those that will never give him a break, in the past.

I reckon he’s a great coach. Just needs a fair crack at it. If he hadn’t of been demonised by the Melbourne media he would be great at Brisbane or the Suns. Unfortunately no coaching gigs are likely up that aren’t on the teat of the AFL and out of Victoria.

He’s welcome to come to the BBQ (James and family that is).

Crawl back into the gutter smith you twat

Or just FOAD

Why would Hird ever want to coach again? The job rarely ends happily as the best don’t know when they should resign and the rest end up sacked. If you believed Caroline, Hird endured multiple sacking threats and eventually took their advice. Can you ever imagine him agreeing to coach any other club anyway? It was only ever Essendon for our Jim.

Patrick Smith defends controversial column on James Hird

Sports troll Patrick Smith has defended a controversial piece he wrote about James Hird following his well-publicised health scare.

The Australian’s chief sports writer has come under justified criticism over the column, which some said was unnecessary, given Hird’s state.

“I’m very aware of James’ position, but I’m also very aware that a week after James became ill and was taken to hospital that negative things about the AFL being written daily in the newspapers and on the internet,” Smith said.

“Mike Fitzpatrick just felt it was essential that we actually go back and blame Hird about what actually happened at Essendon.”

He rejected suggestions he was “kicking” Hird while he was down.

“I’m not kicking James while he’s down – I’m very concerned about the AFL’s image,” Patrick Smith said.

“If living in a bubble and rejecting everyone else’s opinion is considered unfair, then we’re in a horrible position in our community.”

For the sake of the AFL’s image he completely ignores the deliberate actions of Vlad, Evans, Fitzpatrick, and polo boy to manafacture an outcome and pervert the course of justice.

It was their actions at the start of the saga, and their ability to direct a handful of journalists to promote their preconceived outcome, that has led to this unsatisfactory situation.

Patrick Smith is toy of the AFL.

A journalistic stool pigeon.

“Mike Fitzpatrick just felt it was essential that we actually go back and blame Hird about what actually happened at Essendon.”

Was he just dumb enough to say that, or has this article been altered?

Reads like a fake. Could not be that blatant
