James Hird — Sept 25 onwards

I think it weighs against him. I think the big issue is not being an assistant in any form for years.

You can’t have a process as they say that Hird comes out on top. Unless the criteria is simply “your James Hird”

McKay

Arki Butler WSPHU

a few pies players were dons fans
Sidebottom(massive essendon fan) should have let Knights have his wish.

Interesting Butters supported the Doggies.

Due diligence ive heard that phrase alot. Are you sure youre not twatley or Caroline fishing for info.

Generally new young coaches have trouble attracting anyone, early days.

Mitchell couldn’t get mckay.
Rutten only got Kelly in his first year.

No but save actually interviewing coaches all you got is what they have done and the reputation they have.

And just the record of AFL coaches in general.

The typical first time premiership coach is:

Under 45

Came in as an assistant from another AFL club.

Clarko - started the hawks in his 30s

Bomber started at Geelong in his 30s

Dimma started at Richmond in his 30s

Really the only recent exception is Fagan and he has had a seriously good list built around him with some incredible academy development.

Arguably the best new coach in the comp is Mitchell. Started in his late 30s(I think or early 40s)

Other great teams going around Longmuir, Cox. - early 40s start

No, I don’t agree with that at all.

There are a bunch of criteria where Hird would come out on top. It’s not a lack of due diligence if the facts are sought and assessed.

It depends which ones the club weighs heavily as to who should succeed.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but your position is that any process that results in Hird appointed cannot have integrity? (A little confused by the wording of your last).

+1!

Will be interesting to see which way the club goes.

However I think you’re grossly underestimating James pulling power.

Am I remembering correctly that they didn’t sing the club song after a win during the season until after they won the flag?

You are.

Either that or I am also remembering incorrectly.

Personally I wouldn’t appoint any coach that hasn’t worked in the AFL in the last 3-4 years no matter who they are and what their credentials are.

So, where do you rate this video in all this? Clearly, our club has a romance on our players… successful players. Colman meant so much to Essendon. Hird is for EFC, a one in a generation type, who will be talked about like this in years to come.

Yeah I dunno.

TBH who knows exactly what they look for.

I just look at what recent past history suggests.

When was the last time a future premiership AFL coach was plucked out of a mid to bottom table VFL sides footy department?

But also if we had Bartel and McCartney, then pops Kelly might also come anyway.

If he misses out on a head job this time around he might be seeking to add experience to prove that he can be successful at developing clubs and not just at a functional one like Geelong.

A Hird and Horse combined ticket would satisfy everyone, and they complement each other well, just need to work out the structure.

Surround them with a bunch of Essendon, Sydney and Geelong people and the club should have all the foreign IP and local knowledge to MEGA

Hopefully next week will be the last time.

On a serious note, has there been any analysis in this thread (or other threads) about likely origins of premiership coaches, statistically?

I have a vague recollection but framing a search is difficult.

No idea, and I’m certainly not a ‘source’ dude so grain of parmesan and all that. But the chap who passed it along has been in business and been mates with multiple VFL/AFL footballers over a couple of decades and isn’t a gossip or even particularly interested in footy. Out of the blue message, I’ll obviously be quoting myself if it happens.
