JLT Form - Anyone concerned?

Don’t give a toss.

Rd1 loss in similar vein, then I’ll worry

What are the reasons we should be concerned over?

I need to engage my inner Nino

Perhaps Woosha and the coaches are using reverse psychology. Give other teams a false sense of what we’re about. Goodness me, I hope that’s it. We simply cannot afford to go into the season and play like we did for the first lot of games we lost last year otherwise, we can expect a similar result.

I know we all want Essendon to do well, we want it so bad it hurts. Keep praying.

Good post, welcome.

Share all the exact same concerns.

The rule changes as well I am not sure will favour us as I see our midfield still as a weakness despite Shiel entering the foray. The extra space in the middle will benefit the beast midfields, think your Dees and Pies.

Like everyone else I am keeping my fingers crossed that the boys were taking it fairly easy…not that I think that would be the right way to go about it if that was indeed the case.

I’m concerned. Anyone seen west coast this pre season? They look pretty much, like a top 4 team

We looked, like a bottom 4 team. I reckon, even if your the most positive of positive type of person, there has to be a few doubts there. I mean, the way we played pre season, we have seen that sort of garbage a LOT over the last decade

But, il back us in against GWS. If we stink it up and basically look the same against the giants as we did the blues and cats, then I reckon EVERYONE has the right to be p*ssed off. Round 1 can’t come fast enough, because we will 100% know if the pre season was just about miles into legs and trying a few things, or if we are in some serious trouble and the concerns from the JLT are still present

Agree with your first paragraph.
Watching most JLT games I could see a distinguished style amongst most top teams. Richmond, Collingwood, West Coast etc.
Watching these teams I could clearly see their style and the way they play.
When i watched us, i couldn’t really see anything distinguishable except for saad/mckenna off half back and trying to attack down them middle.
Really worrying.

I’m not concerned about our ability to move the ball

I’m worried about team defence, and forward structure. They should be everyone’s 2 biggest concerns imo

Essendon won the marks inside 50 stat against Carlton and Geelong? They did against Carlton at least. Win that stat when you’re playing your preferred side in their preferred positions at their preferred intensity for your preferred time on field and you will win more games than you lose. Wouldn’t sh*t bricks just yet.

so…, just a standard exchange of goods on the side of the road

Good first post and one I agree with. Others don’t agree.

It would be good if one year we had a really great preseason. I have a feeling that quite a few of the “practice matches mean nothing” brigade would consider that just that once they might mean something.

I reckon our first game is a 50/50. I won’t be surprised either way. I would like to see a hard-fought close game if it’s a loss.

If recent history has told us anything about the bombers if you are wondering whether it’s time to be concerned. Its time to be concerned.

It’ll be fine.

Just relax with the kid off and enjoy another premiership year.

Does it mean the combo were at a centre bounce 37 times and scored 1 in 5 times?

To me it highlights a lack of rotation at Sydney. Kennedy Parker Hewitt combo were at the centre bounce 84 times. That the Giants arent mentioned at all highlights their depth perhaps?

Yes it highlights that we had the most succesful quartet of midfield players and they only scored 8 times from 37 attempts. That’s 8 scores, not 8 goals.

It is why the better sides(Richmond, Hawthorn)from the last ten years don’t concern themselves as much with winning clearances. They know that over a whole season it’s not going to contribute that much to the bottom line.

They find other avenues to goal that consistently result in scores and in particular goals.

If you consider the way we play, we are at our most vulnerable when we stream forward and turn the ball over. It is then they we are committed forward and if the opposition can turn the ball over they know they will have loose men.

If you google the name in that tweet he writes some fascinating articles on mathematics in football. He is also the guy that Clarkson employed to construct his gameplans when they started winning flags.

Normally I’m an optimist. Last year I was clearly in the camp of the pre-season being irrelevant (and statistically there’s no correlation between JLT and the regular season).

However, it looked like we were one to two practice matches behind both Carlton and Geelong in both our structures and skill levels. And I just see too many similarities between last years preparation and this years. So this year I’m more in the pessimistic camp; I think we’re in for another slow start.

Collingwood beat FCFC by less than a goal. that gives a little optimism. but im not going to be comfortable until i see what we can pull off in round one.

I think you are underplaying the importance of clearances.
