JLT v Filth - Review Thread

I must be the only one that was disappointed tonight. When we roll over, we roll over like real bad teams do.

We took all our good players off. Why is that so hard to understand?

We took our good players off for a quarter, they had theirs off for the entire match.

We had good players missing too (Hooker, JD). "they had theirs off for the entire match" - that logic doesn't work for me either, we took players off during a game. Their players you speak of was before the game. Leuey coming off was the most important for us.

Elliott was killing us and he was taken off at half time along with a couple of others

I still think we parked it more. Perhaps that is disappointing? I’m not personally disappointed by the loss. Maybe this was even Leuey getting injured simulation

Very, very disappointing.

I was really expecting a charged up team, but Collingwood won it because they were more charged up than us.

We fought and scrambled our way to a lead that should have been enough at ¾ time, in fact I was hoping and expecting that we would really pull away.

Instead the opposite happened. Collingwood gritted their teeth, went in hard and we were brushed aside.

That is not the way I thought we would start the season.
Certainly not the way I wanted.

Newsflash pal. Season hasn’t started yet

Still have trouble hanging onto a lead and letting teams run over us.

Apart from that a good hit out.

how come Jerrett and Morgan are on the list and SMAK is not??

how long will it take coaches to realise Jerrett tries hard but not up to AFL standard??

or am I wrong???

Don’t understand the Goddard criticism. Thought he was one of our best. Creates so much play for us. Anyone else see that 60m bomb to the wing from the back pocket? He is ambitious (yes he sometimes turns the ball over) but also effective.

McGrath is very small.

I wanted us to win this game, so I found it very disappointing. Can some-one explain why they would take off all the best players for the last quarter ??

Smack was good

Gleeson was very good

Zaka showed great heart.

Zerrett is our best player by a very long way.

LOL at panic. For three quarters of the game we didn’t have any of our preferred spine, and in the last we removed Loony Watson Heppell etc.

Roosy was a hero when he did this.

Here

I’m convinced it cant be fixed. Yeah we rested players in the last but Collingwood didn’t have their best team all game.the game was over at 3/qrt time and in typical Essignton fashion blew it.

Not the only one. Collingwood was bottom 6 last year, and they beat us. How anyone can be happy at blowing a 4 goal lead like that, regardless of who was off, I'm staggered by. We were insipid. And that is a terrible sign.

We were missing one clear cut best 22 player from the defence, but they looked rubbish all night. Bags looks done, hopefully he regains form. I don’t think our defence took an intercept mark all night. It was a good thing Collingwood kicked accurately for goal as we showed no ability to get it out of defence, reminding me of both the last two years. We showed no ability to run it out or cut out via disposal.

What of our best 22 forward line was there looked good. Green and Fanta were potent, and I’ll assume Walla had an off night. Stewart was ok, but didn’t really provide a target. McKernan had some cameos. We were really crying out for some more linkup play, say Langford, or if he’d played Laverde.

I’m surprised at the views of McKernan here. I thought he was individually the player most responsible for the loss. And that was him playing well! He can’t ruck. He gave away free kick after free kick. In the last quarter it wasn’t his inability to get a tap that cost us the win. It was his inability to stop Grundy (?) give Collingwood’s second string midfield an arm chair ride. If we have to rely on him in 2017 to ruck, we’ll finish bottom four like 2015. That he had two great moments up forward won’t get him a free pass for his pathetic display. Because it’s not a one-off, it’s a continuation of his form since he joined us.

Generally I actually thought Myers did some good things, but nowhere near enough. Same for Hurley and Howlett. All three hopefully just taking off rust. Watson looked good, Heppell got a lot of it but wasn’t clean.

Overall I didn’t think we showed a great deal more than 2016, which was pretty disappointing.

Was Tippa no good?
No good. Looked slow, missed a goal and just completely off the pace. Had one gifted goal and a few pressure bits. He did make a few good positions in H1, but he wasn't honoured.

Umm because it was a pointless game in terms of scoreboard?

Getting the right loads into players legs was the important thing. Most players played around 60-65%. Returning players bit less than that. Boys that played full seasons last year ala Zaka and Zach played about 80%.

It’s a science man, that’s why the hell we took our best players off in the last quarter.

We took all our good players off. Why is that so hard to understand?

I hate losing, esp to collingwood, so i was in the same boat.

It’s a practice match, so why wasn’t there more practice on how to set up when Leuy is off the ground, esp in the last ?
why wasn’t there better set ups when said good players were taken off.
no good IMO saying oh we took our good players off, and just left the rest who were out there to their own devices.
If leuy was to go down in a legit match, we’d be ■■■■■■, you’d want to hope they have plans in place to either not allow that to happen, or at least manage the damage when he’s not on.

It is what it is, however IMO this was a good chance to build some momentum and confidence and enjoyment around the group, with a good solid win.

That being said plently of positives out of tonight, now it’s just figuring out how they all fit together.
Fanta and Green worked well together, and altho stewart didn’t get alot of it, he was rarely beaten in marking contests.
Add Daniher and you have those 4 as the main forwards and our forwardline theoretically is already imroved.

Tippa looked underdone, hopefully rd 1 he is moved back to the hbf, just looks lost as a forward.

We controlled them for most of the game, which is a positive in one sense, but then we just allow too many easy goals to our own dumb play. we should have been 6-8 goals up at 3/4 time, instead of 3-4 ish.

Goddard is cooked, plain and simple and has been for awhile.

The rest, plently to look forward too, just gotta hope all the pieces gel together.

LOL at panic. For three quarters of the game we didn’t have any of our preferred spine, and in the last we removed Loony Watson Heppell etc.

After game reviews are full of deadset morons.

In-game and pre-game aren’t much better!

Ants goes all in with his panic dollars in the first preseason game. FMD…

I’m not disappointed by the loss but I’m not going to make excuses for it either. Both sides had key personnel missing from the game and both sides rested/managed players throughout the game but it doesn’t hide the fact we were poor in the last quarter and I thought pretty poor all night around the stoppages. Both sides would be happy with the hitout

There were times where the Pies kicked/marked the length of the ground with ease.

Top 10 most effective players.

Phillips and Smith the hard running outside types, 20 marks between them. The value of Stanton to us is very underrated.

We got well beaten in midfield all things considered and they were also missing 3 of their best in Pendles, Treloar & Adams.

I've frequently been less optimistic this preseason. It's easy to forget we were bottom four WITH these players in 2015.

You may be right and I think he needs to improve quickly if he’s going to play many more senior games.

My take on the game:

I felt we had good players on the park with boys they haven’t played with before. It will take a while to click and we saw it in patches. It wasn’t bad.

However, I hated our ball movement from the backline, particularly from kickouts. Same spot every time, 60-70 meters out on the boundary side. So predictable to defend and not once did we look inboard or try to switch, I hope to see this change in the actual season.

Also, we didn’t defend kickouts well either. The Pies were able to get isolated contests with additional numbers. They had 0 trouble bringing to ball out unless it was in the hands of Dunn or some spud. Again. Something to work on.

Some player reviews:

McGrath has it. Wanganeen like. I’ve seen enough and I’m convinced. I don’t care what anyone thinks.

Jobe hasn’t missed a beat

Walla is not a forward! For the love of god, put him back into the backline.

Smack looked like late 2015. I hope this form continues, he adds so much to our team when in form.

Kelly is a good footy player. Regardless of age. Doesn’t matter.

BJ is getting worse with age and needs a new role in the team. Can’t stop players and struggles being clean with contact. Maybe a forward?

Hurley did not look match fit. Needs more time.

Like Fanta, Green and Coyler. Image these boys at the feet of Joey D and a resting Tbell or Smack? We’re good.

Thank god footy is back!

Carn the Dons!!!
