Joe Daniher. Gone

Aren’t the players on holiday for the next 6 weeks? How will he catch up with them?

Lions have the worst scoring accuracy in the AFL. Then they bring in Joe. Boy oh boy!

No idea. He just said over the next 6 weeks :woman_shrugging:t2:

Upset? Triggered? What are you on about.

I’m happy Joe’s gone. Bring in another good kid and play Harry Jones.

If you’re a Daniher and you have no emotional connection to the colour of our footy jumper and it’s all just cash to you, then good riddance.

The quicker he takes his moustache and finger twirling to Fortitude Valley the better.

Hasn’t he had all year to get know the players? They were living in the same hub!

How do I sign up for this 200k of super contributions?

My only regret is that we didn’t turf this lazy loser last year. Talk about your overpriced, soft, and entitled chump. I won’t have to watch him run under the ball and cry for frees anymore. Sit on all the fences you want next year, Joe. Seeing him have to work hard, chase and not sook will be worth it for the last 3 years of mopey Joe. I reckon he’s in for a big shock to the system next year.

Just watch the AFL tighten the rules on pushing guys under the flight of the ball next season, and 50m penalties for guys standing in the protected area on his kicking arc. Will win a Coleman at BL

He can’t. Not in Victoria at least. Not yet.

Sam Maclures article suggesting Joe is leaving on an inferior offer is a bit insulting…

If true we will have to match.

Bombers may match Lions’ offer to Daniher

By

Updated

Any incentives in the deal Brisbane Lions put to Joe Daniher will not count towards the compensation Essendon will receive, making it more likely the Bombers will match the Lions’ offer for the restricted free agent to force a trade.

Daniher on Wednesday became the second player in two days to walk out of the Bombers, after dashing defender Adam Saad asked to be traded to Carlton.

With Conor McKenna having already returned to Ireland and Orazio Fantasia considering a move for the second straight year, the Essendon exodus may not be over.

The AFL has confirmed to The Age that only “guaranteed money” will be considered when the league computes what a club shall be given as compensation for a departing free agent.

Sources close to the Daniher deal believe the Lions are planning to offer Daniher a base rate of less than what he’s earning in his final year at Essendon - more than $700,000 - due to his recent injury history.

That deal, however, could increase depending on how many games Daniher plays and how many goals he kicks.

The Lions may consider changing their offer to avoid having to negotiate a trade with the Bombers.

Daniher and his representatives began telling people on Wednesday morning that he wanted to play for Brisbane in 2021.

His decision comes a day after Saad told the Bombers he wished to be traded to Carlton.

Essendon released a short statement on Wednesday afternoon, confirming that Daniher had expressed a desire to leave the club for “lifestyle” reasons.

"We put forward a contract offer to Joe, but he has expressed his strong desire to live away from Melbourne,” list manager Adrian Dodoro said.

“We understand that free agency is part of our industry and he has a right to explore his options."

While the Lions were tight-lipped on Daniher, rival clubs who have been monitoring the situation were told on Wednesday morning that the All-Australian had landed on Brisbane as his club of choice.

It comes 12 months after Daniher asked for a trade to Sydney. The deal between Essendon and the Swans fell apart at the 11th hour.

Joe Daniher: A timeline

  • 2012: First round father-son selection for Essendon at AFL national draft (No. 10).
  • 2013: Makes his debut in round 11 v Carlton.
  • 2014: Club leading goalkicker (28 goals)
  • 2015: Club leading goalkicker (34)
  • 2016: Club leading goalkicker (43)
  • 2017: All-Australian season, Essendon’s best-and-fairest winner, and club leading goalkicker (65).
  • 2018: Restricted to seven games with groin injury.
  • 2019: Restricted to seven games with groin injury. August: Daniher’s meeting with the Swans CEO Tom Harley is revealed by The Age . October: Trade deadline passes with Essendon and Sydney unable to work out a trade.
  • 2020: Restricted to four games with injury. October: Nominates the Brisbane Lions as his preferred club in 2021, after 108 games and 191 goals for Essendon.

Trade sources indicate that the Bombers were offered pick nine and Sydney’s future first-round pick, which is currently pick three given the Swans finished 16th on the ladder this season.

Sydney didn’t actually have pick nine, but would have received it from Carlton in exchange for Tom Papley if the Swans knew they were getting Daniher.

The best deal Essendon could hope for via free-agency compensation would be a first-round pick (pick seven). But even that would only happen if the Lions were willing to offer Daniher a long-term deal at significant money.

The key forward has been seriously affected by injury over recent seasons. Since the start of 2018 he has played 15 games for Essendon, with four this year.

For this reason, Brisbane may be more cautious with what they’re willing to offer Daniher financially. It could be a heavily incentive-based contract, with games played and goals kicked built into the deal.
