John Worsfold

Can’t recall, might’ve been though. As much as running off though, with the way we were getting beaten in the contest it’s just as easy to imagine him getting sucked into the contest and hill being left free on the outside.

Is John.Is Good.

Would their 6 players out have been walk up starts in our side? Would our Kelly, Parish or Ambrose get a game for them? Just curious…
Also, what would a combined best 22 look like (objectively, lol), as in how many from each side?
I reckon their list ■■■■■ on ours, which tends to suggest Woosha did alright, got us within 9 points with 10 mins to go.

It was gleeson who was dropped the next week.

Yes and no.
Combined 22 would have Hurls, Chook (defense), Joedan, Merrett, Raz, Heppell and from there I’m starting to struggle.

Dons keen to move forward down back Ryan Davidson June 9, 2017 10:17 AM

ESSENDON is in the market for a defensive playmaker in the mould of out-of-contract stars Jason Johannisen and Jasper Pittard, says coach John Worsfold.

With veterans James Kelly and Brent Stanton in the twilight of their careers, and youngsters Andrew McGrath, Conor McKenna and rookie Ben McNiece still developing, the Bombers are looking for an experienced rebounder who can break the lines off half-back.

Bulldog Johannisen resumed contract talks with the premiers recently after the Norm Smith medalist had previously announced he wanted to wait until season’s end to discuss a new deal.

Pittard told AFL.com.au in April that he sees his future at Port Adelaide, but was waiting for a new collective bargaining agreement to be reached between the AFL and the AFL Players’ Association before re-signing.

When asked about Johannisen and Pittard on SEN on Friday morning, Worsfold said both fitted the bill on what the club was looking for.

“I would say a really clean, quick, strong rebounding half-back would be a strong addition to our squad,” Worsfold said.

"Ben McNiece is on the rookie list, Conor McKenna is coming along nicely and Andy McGrath is already showing glimpses of how he’s going to be able to win the footy and rebound as well.

“Adding another one into the mix with Brent Stanton and James Kelly at their age, having another (good) kick coming through (half-back) and come straight into the line-up would be handy.”

While he admitted the Bombers are in a hurry to get some run out of the backline, Worsfold called for patience with second-year defender Aaron Francis.

The intercept-mark specialist has only played five games in two seasons after being taken with pick six in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

The premiership coach said the 19-year-old was developing “brilliantly”, and the Bomber faithful would see more of the South Australian at senior level later in the season.

“He’s going to be a very good player, and the fact he’s not in (the senior team) and dominating games right at the moment is not a concern for us,” Worsfold said.

"At VFL level, it’s just his overall ability to compete with the size of the guys he’s going to play on for the full 120 minutes.

"We’re really keen to develop him as an inside midfielder, and we’re putting a lot of time (into him playing there in the VFL).

“He can certainly impact the game as a forward, but as an intercept backman, that is most likely where we’ll see him play a fair bit of footy in the next couple of years.”

After watching JJ squibb it hard last night for the Dogs, my interest in paying the ~$800k we’re rumoured to have offered is diminishing by the minute…

lot of mixed messages about Francis… So is he being developed as a forward, back or inside mid?

Being developed as our new Courtney Johns

Utility type who will be so valuable as can impact anywhere. Like Hodge/Goddard have done in their careers.

Long term they see him as an inside mid

He has played as a loose defender at junior level, can’t really get away with that in top level.

Learning how to be a fwd at AFL level with AFL level defenders on him will help him learn what’s required as a defender. And also help develop his forward line play.

Will be good to see if they do as Woosh says play him back more towards end of year.

Like I said, lot of mixed messages. He’ll be a gun wherever they put him once he’s fit enough. Who knows when that will be. I have faith that Worsfold is talking to the right people about the right way to manage him and develop him. I don’t believe him when he says they’re not at all worried about where he’s at. They may not be worried as such, but they’re definitely monitoring it closely looking for ways to get the kid going headlong in the right direction more quickly.

Article doesn’t make sense, he isn’t playing big minutes at all as an inside mid he is playing predominately forward. Almost reads like Worsfold is talking about both Langford and Francis. The idea of him being a midfielder is pretty far fetched at the moment, he is struggling to cope with a couple of big minute games in the twos as a forward. Got plenty of work to do before I get excited about Francis.

Keeping it simple.
Francis is currently playing forward with some midfield bursts in the Twos.

  • as others have noted, good for overall game development given his endurance levels at the moment.

Next year and the year after Whoosha sees him in the Firsts primarily playing behind the ball. (Eg Hepp & McGrath development path)

Longer term - when he’ll be 22 - club sees him as an inside mid.

You can have your opinions on whether this will happen, but it’s a decent plan for someone with potential with a capital P.

was broken down in the Franga thread but the quotes in article weren’t actually attributed to the correct player. The stuff about inside mid is re:Langford. The stuff about intercept marking defender and playing on big opponents for the full 120mins is about Frang.

Just the usual AFL media hatchet job on a pretty clear interview on SEN this morning.

Very impressive to hear a senior coach in Luke Beveridge say that it’s up to him to get his players up and take full responsibility for their loss.
Great coach

Having listened to the interview this morning I’m pretty sure this comment was actually about Langford.

Yep because he later said francis will be down back dominating.

woosh also said he doesn’t really care where a player plays while in their formative years.

Whether you agree with this is up to you. I personally don’t.

he will be a inside mid like Rough head does now and then… when things are not going well on ball. Throw a bigger body on the ball… thats about it. even if it is attributed to him that comment…some saying langford?

All coaches have said it at one time or another. He was saying that because he was taking ownership that he had failed to do that because the Dogs have been poor this year. It was also him saying that it is up to him to get them back up again.

Not sure that makes him a great coach though.

He is a good coach because he has won a GF, he will be even better if he can repeat it.
