Last Time They Met

Great read.

Another brilliant piece from Shaw. Love the inference at the end that despite how mush each aspect of the game has supposedly improved, it was better back then.

I remember that Rnd 13 2000 match vividly.

We scored 7.7.49 to their donuts 0.0.00 in the first quarter and the crowd gave the boys a rousing ovation at quarter time at which the commentators even remarked about.

Damage done in that first quarter allowed them to cruise for the final three quarters of which North tried to launch somewhat of a comeback, a few times during the game, but never seriously threatened.

JJ was outstanding throughout that period after struggling to string games together from the beginning of his career up until that '99-'01 era.

He seemed to have a happy knack of scoring game changing goals or goals that got the team on a much needed roll.

Fantastic era of football.

Chapman's four goals on debut we were his two year deal.

This is the only game in about the past 5 years where i actually thought we might be a genuine contender. Such a complete performance. Unfortunately chappy didnt really fire a shot after that game and the possession style of play fell apart a week or two later.

What about when we beat WCE in 2012 or was it 2013?

2012…it was as if you could feel something building that night…turned out to be a sh*tstorm

Which was 2012? 2013 was when Carlisle kicked that huge goal at the end.

2012 beat them at Etihad when they went in undefeated. Won by 10 gls

Yes 2013 is the game you mentioned in Perth

Then 2014 we won at the death and Jobe went crazy in excitement and there was no one around to celebrate with him.

(We dedicate way too much of our brains to minutiae.)

Watched that one in the early hours while in Europe. Bought my first ever Essendon membership before the last quarter ended. Thought we were the realest of deals.

Ended up being the “Neagle played on” of the Hird era.

The Knights Era produced some of the best and worst (on field) moments in Essendon history.

I would buy the frig out of a ‘Best of the Knights Era’ DVD.

Think of the players that would be on the cover!

Same can be said of the Hird era

but on topic, really struggle to think of great contests against St Kilda

David Flood and Dean Wallis keeping Lockett to 0 goals.

That was awesome, remember it like it was yesterday!

CHF: GUMB
FF: NEAGLE

Neagle, Skipworth, Prime Lovett, Atkinson. All champions.

"The boys from Nhill kept him to nil.”

Flood played on Lockett, Wallis had the fun job of filling the gap in front of Lockett.

Less remembered is Anthony Daniher moving to CHB to beat Loewe.

That game was hilarious. There’s never been a more unjustifiably arrogant group of supporters than St Kilda fans that year. That game was memorable (not just for Nancy’s miss at the end) but for one of the Grog Squad’s greatest sledges against an opposition group. ‘Take the price tag off your scarves’.
