List build - where are we going in the next 10,000 posts?

Our trouble has been that we never actually do seem to finish where we should. Or at least where our percentage indicates we should finish.

Overperform how?

By beating the worst team in 30 years by 2 points?

Unfortunately there are a lot of ā– ā– ā– ā–  teams the last 5 years. Unless we blatantly tank this list was never going to be in the bottom 2-3 in any given year.

As has been proven over and over you don’t need top 3 picks to successfully rebuild. You just need quality recruiters to nail the picks you have and be shrewd in how you manage your list.

Both mobs who played earlier today are prime examples.

By finishing between 9th-13th every year.

We finished where we deserved to finish. Plenty of divided opinions out there still claim we’ve underperformed given the talent we had post saga.

Facts are we haven’t drafted well for over a decade and we are ā– ā– ā– ā–  at defending. There’s enough talent to work with and given another bunch of quality picks this draft and likely next we will hopefully land some players who might just push us towards some sustained success.

But there’s another half dozen clubs just as ā– ā– ā– ā–  as us right now who also need picks and players.

There is quite a few poor teams this year which must be concerning for the AFL. The top 5 then a massive gap

I think AFL loves to see Bombers at the bottom

Funny how AFL want equalisation yet there has been nothing done. Happy to leave teams at the bottom rot and top sides get stronger and stay there.

Maybe split the draft

The first 25 picks are revserved for the bottom 8.

Teams that finish in the top 8 have access from 25 onwards. if the good teams want acess to the first round they can trade for picks

The AFL loves seeing Essendon non-successful, but also cash in on their supporters thinking they are close to being successful.

Can forget about pick 1 or 2, we’re not finishing below west coast or richmond and neither will Melbourne.

And the way north are tracking we may have a battle to get pick 3.

Just going by what Cal said, said pick 1 is up for grabs

I find the ā€œbottom out and get draft picks ā€œ line overdone. You have to develop the squad you have. That, is where I feel we have weak. That and training standards.
I feel that some people get more excited about window shopping than actually investing in what you have.

In an only 23 games season with an unequal draw, percentage probably tells you more than game win %.

In Brad’s tenure we’ve had the fourth worst percentage and have been 2 points off finishing in that position.

So in summary - it’s not that we’ve overperformed, but rather our ladder position has ended up higher than it should because of close wins against bad sides

And what we have, are BOG average players who will never get us to a Premiership.

But I guess we just gotta stick with what we’ve got.

I think they want people to believe that they want equalisation.

We cant replace a bucnch of players in one go

That’s oversimplifying what I said. Yep, we have also tended to value players that should have been got rid of after a couple of seasons. At the same time you have to realise where we are at. A young list that needs to be developed.

At the same time, we are not short of high draft picks. I refuse to believe we have chosen badly at every occasion. Why haven’t those picks come along?
