Also a big part of our problem is we were happy to trade out so many second round picks and those are the picks if you nail you can find gold
Mid-season draftees are mostly 6 month contracts. Virtually try before you buy.
Jones, Menzie, Laverde, Lual, Prior, Goldstein, Shiel from that list I would delist without blinking.
Edwards, ADJ for differing reasons I would personally keep, but could reasonably be vulnerable too.
So thatās 9 players off the list without even trying to 4D chess trades for Shiel, Hobbs etc
Weāll have zero problems bringing in 4 new draftees + have fexibilty to extend 2 mid-season picks and trade in a player or two from another club.
Not that weāve been especially good with those picks either. Redman and Jones are the only ones of note I can think of right now
second round gold was Merrett.
also was a great draft year that the afl barred us from due to saga and could have had 2 more talented players from that draft.
Refer to my earlier post on how our most important players came to the club
Merrett? Ridley? Bryan? Hayes looks promising too.
Mosquito had the skills but the coaches couldnāt keep him on track.
A bit harsh on Laverde
Yep. We want him leaving as a free agent.
Proximity to the airport for trips to Ibiza in September?
Beach culture doesnāt really sell it for the Gold Coast and Sydney does it?
Essendons selling point should be to the best indigenous kids in the land - Dreamtime. Anzac Day(works for Collingwood), huge crowds.
Playing for Essendon should mean you are box office.
No club looks good when itās mediocre. But the dons look amazing when good.
Itās just been a long time.
Tried that with Rankine unsuccessfully
I addressed Merrett and Ridley earlier, as both of those drafts were affected by our saga situation.
I did neglect Bryan though, and good call on Mozzie.
Heās south Australian.
If a player wants into a big Melbourne club. We are or should be a compelling option.
Everyone canāt play for bloody Collingwood.

Huh? Merrett pick was the Crameri trade. Why does the saga affect Ridley being a second rounder?
Tbone said we hadnāt used seconds well. You listed only Redman and Jones. I listed more. Not sure how the saga comes into it.
I would argue weāve had more success with second round picks than first rounders recently!
It still depends significantly on how Perkins, Cox, Reid, Hobbs, Tsatas, Caddy and Kako develop. Many Blitzers writing a number of those off way too early IMO.
In Geelongs case, I think the traded-in stars ended up having a bigger impact in their premiership years than their top-end draftees.
I Know the cats have been near the top but, they are like us.
their best players were from later picks or trades
Danger / Cameron / Smith - trade
Stengle - SSP
Stewart - pick #40
Blicavs - alternative talent
Then you have Max Holmes whose looking a player drafted with #20
but the next generation is now also mostly traded in (#originally drafted)
#7 Smith, Bowes #10, Bruhn #12, Henry #17
drafted - Jhye Clark#8 (Suns bonus pick), #19 De Koning, #20 Holmes
Trading out picks for a young player rather than a mystery box. Or in Bowes case, trading in a player plus a first rd pick rather than picking late in the draft.
St Kilda also interesting, have had more early picks than us and plenty of misses.
Best players
Traded in - Steele, Macrae
Rookie Draft - Marshall , Wilkie
Drafted - #4 King, #11 Wanganeen-Milera

#11 Wanganeen-Milera
This kid is a ā ā ā ā ā ā ā star.

Huh? Merrett pick was the Crameri trade. Why does the saga affect Ridley being a second rounder?
IIRC Merrett was drafted with an end of first round pick the club ānegotiatedā as result of arguing the loss of 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders was too harsh.
